Jerusalem (JTA)— A large
proportion of Israel's 700,000
Arab citizens staged a na-
tional general strike last
week to protest what they
charge is "continuous
discrimination by the govern-
ment."
It was the first general
strike by Arab Israelis since
1976 when they proclaimed
"Land Day" to protest the ex-
propriation of Arab-owned
land in Galilee by the govern-
ment. Unlike that occasion,
which was marked by vio-
lence and bloodshed, this
strike was peaceful.
Most Arabs remained in
their homes, as per the in-
structions of the National
Committee of Arab Local
Authorities. Likud Minister-
Without-Portfolio Moshe
Arens, who is responsible for
the Arab population, noted
that some 40 percent of Arab
workers employed in Jewish
cities and towns went to their
jobs. The Bedouin population,
numbei-ing about 80,000, ig-
nored the 'strike.

Budapest (JTA) — A center
of Jewish Studies, the first in
an Eastern bloc country, was
dedicated last week at the
Hungarian Academy of Sci-
ences, under whose auspices
it will operate. The ceremony
was the highlight of the ex-
ecutive committee meeting
here of the Memorial Founda-
tion for Jewish Culture,
which initiated and funded
the Center.
Prof. Ivan Berend, presi-
dent of the Academy of Sci-
ences, said the new center
was established as part of the
Faculty of Arts and Sciences
at the Eotvos Lorand Univer-
sity in Budapest. Prof. Isador
Twersky, director of the
Center of Jewish Studies at
Harvard University, will par-
ticipate in its development.
