vital in retaining the human
as well as the spiritual values
of the Zionist idealism.
There is another need: A
knowledge of the fact that
there were periods of depres-
sion when Jews were leaving
Israel in impressive numbers.
Even in the year when Adolf
Hitler rose to power in- Ger-
many, in 1933, the number of
Jews who left Jewish
Palestine were twice that of

Serious Concern:
Prevailing
Fanaticisms

This commitment of faith
needs affirmation.
There are other problems
more serious than yeridah.

Entering politics in Israel,

supporter and was Minister of
Justice in the Begin-ruled
government. A leader in the
Israeli legal ranks, he was
among his country's leading
lawyers. He was on the Israeli
team that conducted negotia-

There are special reasons
for interest in him. He and
the Katznelson family were
frequent visitors here, on
public missions and as guests
of William and Bella Hordes.
Shmuel Tamir's mother,
Bathsheba Katznelson, was a
member of the first Israel
Knesset. She was elected as a
General Zionist. His father,
Dr. Reuven Katznelson, was
