Israeli Cabinet
Snubs Waldheim
Visit To Jordan

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Cabinet last Sunday pointed-
ly refused to issue a formal
statement condemning King
Hussein of Jordan for playing
host to President Kurt Wald-
heim of Austria the previous
week.
But Prime Minister Yit-
zhak Shamir, who blocked a-
formal condemnation, lashed
out himself against Jordan.
He told a visiting group of
Canadian Jewish leaders that
the invitation to the Austrian
head of state who is suspected
of complicity in Nazi war
crimes and the Jordanian
media's vicious attacks on
Israel during Waldheim's
visit" were "an affront to the
Jewish people and Israel?'
Waldheim has a four-day
visit to the Jordanian
kingdom. It was his second
trip abroad since his audience
with Pope John Paul II at the
Vatican.

can Jewish Committee's di-
rector of international rela-
tions, the Austrian official
indicated that he planned to
participate personally in the
conference, which he • hoped
would lead to "a further im-

understanding."
