There also was some
acknowledgement that
Israel is expected to react to
a higher moral standard, a
concept which really has
never been defined. It im-
plies, of course, that Israel is
moral, at least as moral as
the rest of the world, but
somehow it should be more
moral.
Why the world standard
should not be good enough
for Israel has never been ex-
plained by those who seek
more of Israel. If it would be
moral for any other national
to occupy the West Bank,
why not Israel? And-is it not
true that Israel has acted on
a higher standard at various
times during the last 40
years when it returned land
won at the cost of many lives
during four major wars -
none of its own making?
Tom Brokaw stated in
sonorous tones that Israel
will not negotiate with the
PLO because it considers
the PLO a terrorist
organization. The implica-
tion is that it is not and no
mention was made that the
PLO does not recognize
Israel or that its historic ob-
jective of destroying the
Jewish State has not chang-
ed or tempered throughout
the years.
Brokaw cited no other
reason besides land owner-
ship for Israel's reluctance
to surrenderthe West Bank.
The program, of course,
was good television. It of-
fered controversy, good film
footage - which in televi-
sion terms means action
and violence - and respond-
ed to a growing and unfor-
tunate public sentiment
that the Arab-Israeli con-
flict could somehow be easi-
ly resolved if only Israel
would relent.
Unfortunately, NBC prov-
ed again that television does
not understand its respon-
sibility to offer balance and
depth to such highly volatile
issues. Research entails
more than placing a
microphone in front of a
young Arab girl and asking
her whether she hates. Jews,
then "balancing" the
presentation by asking Jews
if they hate Arabs.
Suffice it to say, NBC not
only painted a very one-
sided picture, distorting the
Israeli position, but it did
little to advance the cause of
understanding by the public
of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
