glorious Grosse
Pointe home built in
1917 . . . with white
wicker
rockers,
glass
chandeliers and a winding
staircase, was recently
transformed into an elegant
mansion of the "Roaring 20s"
for an "Evening In The Era of
the Great Gatsby."
The carefully planned
metamorphosis set the stage
of a Michigan Cancer Founda-
tion benefit for its supporters,
the Circle of Fellows, at the
Lakeshore Drive home of
Leanard and Sybil Jaques.
Guests arrived in flappers'
feathers and hats, Brooks
Brothers' skimmers, sequins,
saddle shoes and two-tone
wing tips . . . among other at-
tire conjured up from a grand,
old bygone age . . . Two
gazebos, and a lighthouse
specially built for the occa-
sion, a strolling garden path
and a vintage 1930 Rolls
Royce accentuated the
Gatsby-esque flavor of the
affair.
Special celebrity guest, ac-
tress Samantha Eggar, joined
in the celebration and mingl-
ed with the party's 100-plus
Circle members attending.
Playing were both versions
of the movie . . . Robert Red-
ford's recent role as Jay
Gatsby, and Alan Ladd's
depiction in the 1949 black
and white original ..
Baskets of daisies, name of
the movie's heroine, were on
each table.
Lake St. Clair, calm and
glistening with a summer
moon, provided the final
touches of a perfect evening in
the era of The Great Gatsby.
CONGRATS . . . to Rose
Guttman of Irving's
Delicatessen Restaurant .. .
on her brithday.
MEN'S CLUB of Cong.
B'nai David on Southfield,
holds fund raiser this Sunday
at Oak Park's Shepard Park
. . . Their booth for the In-
dependence Day festivities
will sell kosher hot dogs and
hamburgers on kosher buns.
HILDEE ZWICK, 1986
graduate of Akiva Hebrew
Day School, and sophomore
journalism major at Stern
College in New York, has had
her first article published in
a national magazine.
It's called, "You May Now
Divorce The Bride!," a
lighthearted look at the
marital fortunes of the
characters on the daytime

A

television series, "All My
Children" . . . and slated to
appear in the August issue of
Daytime TV magazine.
Hildee, daughter of localites
Jack and Shifra Zwick, is an
editorial assistant at Sterling
Magazines, publisher of
Daytime TV . . . plus also
writing for the Stern College
Student newspaper, The
Observer
"I DO" DEPT. . . . Susan
Cassel and Blair Kaiman are
engaged . . . with spoken
marital vows either end of
this year or first part of next.
JASON NOVETSKY, son
of Gayle and Mike Novetsky,
and grandson of Doris and Iry
Novetsky and Sam and the
late Pearl Weltman, was nam-
ed "Athlete Of The Month,"
recently at Oak Park High
. . . Jason pitched a no-hitter
on his birthday . . . and had
three runs batted in . . . P.S.
. . . He's also an excellent
student.
CONGRATS . . . to Emily
Brown, former localite and
bridal consultant . . . on her
90th birthday . . . Emily lives
at 5100 N.E. Second Ave.,
Miami, Fla. 33137.
IT'S CALLED "Bear
Essentials" . . . carrying
everything in stuffed bears
and "bearaphernalia" as
Mickey and Beryl Levin open
their second all-bear store at
Hunters Square on Orchard
Lake Rd. ... Their first one,
at Southland Mall, downriver,
is a big favorite since opening
October 1985.
Mickey and Beryl's Bear
Essentials is the only store of
its kind in Michigan . . . and
one of the country's very few
teddy bear stores . . . Because
of the shop's large size,
however, chances are it'll also
carry other stuffed animals
. . . but only at this locale.
CONGRATS . to Esther
and Abe Kass . . . on their
55th anniversary . . . Both
also celebrated their 75th bir-
thdays this year.
AFTER 16 years, Marilyn
Mazell is retiring from the
Oak Park School Board .. .
It's the longest tenure of
anyone on this OP body .. .
and a board room will be
named in her honor.
TRIVIA DEPT. . . . from
Rick Nessel . . . How City of
Novi got its name During
days of stagecoach run from
Detroit to Ann Arbor, says
Rick, Novi was its sixth stop
. . . and noted as No. VI.
CONGRATS . . . to Mary
Lou Weiss (Leo) . . . on her
birthday.
