Truffles

Continued from preceding page

beautiful place . . . and will
probably be booked up in no
time.
GOOD WAITRESS
DEPT.. . . Kim Rosen, hubby
Ken's frau . . . evenings at
Machus Foxys on Orchard
Lake Road, south of Maple
. . . Very efficient, pleasant
and personable . . . with a
smile that makes the good
food at Foxys taste even
better.
THEY COME FROM
everywhere . . . all parts of
town . . . as Red Devil on
Fenkell and Greenfield con-
tinues to serve one of the best
meals in town . . . at low
prices . . . and is a very fine
dollar-for-dollar buy . . .
Owner Yahia (Yah-yah)
Mawari, former Yemeni but-
cher, beams with that gleam-
ing smile of his when talking
about the fresh food . . . veal,
pasta, prime rib of beef (a
tremendous favorite) and so
many other homemade
popular dishes . . ..His round
pizza is still among the best
anywhere.
"A TRIBUTE TO
BROADWAY" is one-woman
show by Nancy Gurwin .. .
with three men . . . two sing
and one narrates . . . Songs
are from top musicals and low
budget and last about an
hour . . . Available dates for
organizations are still open.
YES, FORMER Shanghai
Shapiro's in West Bloomfield
Plaza on Orchard Lake Rd., is
expected to be another
delicatessen . . . This time,
however, with experience and
popularity.
SHEILA KAYE, come-
dienne, will be at Historic
Holly Hotel on Battle Alley in
Holly, July 9-11.
THE OUTSIDE PATIO at
Norm's Oyster Bar on
Franklin Rd. off Nor-
thwestern Hwy. seats about
85.
GOOD FOOD DEPT. . . .
the Tuna Pocket at Buddy's
Pizza on Northwestern and
Middlebelt . . . Tuna in pita
bread with chopped tomatoes,
black olives and alfalfa
sprouts.
NOAH AND • PAT
LAMBERT, owners of the
Lazy Lion eatery, have taken
over and refurbished the
former Lake Orion "Ben's
Bull Pen" restaurant.
It's now called Haymakers
. . . an historical country set-
ting that is drawing urban
diners to the Joslyn Road
location in Keatington
Village, just off 1-75 or
Clarkston Road . . .
Haymakers is within minutes
of Pine Knob and
Meadowbrook . . . with food
prepared by Chef Steve
McAuley, former sous chef for
Chef Milos Cihelka at the
Golden Mushroom.

Daughter and son, Sue and
Brad Lambert, manage the
restaurant while Pat and
Noah continue to watch their
Lazy Lion . . . but coming in
at intervals to "see how the
kids are doing" and helping
out.
The structure, built in the
early 1900s, was originally a
breeding barn for champion
cattle . . . In its updated state,
the heavy wood structural
beams have been incor-
porated in the design.
Entering the restaurant,
Haymakers guests are
welcomed by a handsome bar
and an eating area for 50 per-
sons . . . The main dining
area, up an impressive divid-
ed staircase, is dominated by
a lifesize form of a bull
fashioned in stained glass.
Haymakers 150-seat
restaurant is open for lunch
and dinner seven days a week
. . . A private room, "The
Library," seating 25 to 30, is
already getting reservations
into the winter for small
parties.
Piano stylings by Todd Jor-
dan are Thursday, Friday and
Saturday nights, 5 p.m. to
closing.
ONE THING I'VE learned
about restaurants is not to
frequent them when they
have just opened and the
kinks still aren't smoothed
out . . . I remember trying a
brand new dining spot in New
York, which has since been
sold, and being very impress-
ed with the decor . . . But the
French chef was temperamen-
tal and couldn't speak
English . . . He didn't unders-
tand the waiters and
waitresses and they didn't
understand him . . . I think
he went on a sit-down strike
in the middle of flaming
something with Burgundy
. . . Our waitress burned her
hand in the process and we
waited at least two hours to
be served . . . The chef was hot
but the food was cold and we
were steaming.
ORTHEIA BARNES,
noted Detroit vocalist and her
quartet, "Hy Flyt," will per-
form on the P'Jazz stage
tonight . . . at Hotel Pontchar-
train on Washington Blvd. . . .
Concert is 6:30 p.m. by the
usual terrace level outdoor
pool.
