spaces, Yaakov broke the
monotony with a large hang-
ing chandelier, made of an in-
teresting blown glass Arab
jug.- Interlinking vines,
shrubs, plants and flowers,
many placed in clay jugs,
turn the courtyard into a
varied interior garden. Free-
flying canaries used to twit-
ter amid the foliage until.one
day they flew right out the
house.
Ruhama uses warm-colored
rugs to relieve the cold stone.
She prefers violet, purple,
brown and blue. She also feels
that her decor should con-
form to the Arabic-style ar-
chitecture, and uses uphols-
tered window seats, many
cushions, copper utensils and
a low, mosaic-top coffee table.
Before their marriage,
Yaakov had furnished the
house with old, massive fur-
niture which he himself had

repaired and renovated. Some
of these pieces remain, such
as an ornate army chair
rescued from a monastery
and a huge, black wooden
table he picked up in the Arab
market long ago.
The Hisdei residence shows
originality and ingenuity, as
do many of the rooftop
gardens that abound in the
green-starved neighborhood.
Although they display each
owner's particular style and
tastes just as the homes do,
the gardens are a unifying ele-
ment in the glorious, open

Some gardens are laid out
conservatively in window
boxes and plant holders.
Others use interesting com-
binations of greenery, scat-
tered with archaeological ar-
tifacts and rock garden-style
artistry. Trestles that double
as Sukkah frames in the fall
sometimes support vines and
tall flowers. Even trees and
bushes are planted.
