She also objects to the media's use of the phrase "white supremacist" in connection with her husband. Speaking on the phone from Cohoctah, where she said her husband was unavailable for interview, she emphasized, "We are separatists. All we want is a small area of land, which has already got a 98 percent white population," a reference to the Aryan Nationalists' campaign for the establish- ment of an "Aryan Homeland" in the Pacific Northwest. Among the recipients of "From the Mountain" are some of the 1,800 prisoners in state and federal institutions with whom Miles corresponds as part of his "prison ministry". Since Miles spent six years in the federal penitentiary in Marion, Ill. for his role in the bombing of school buses in Pontiac in 1973, he has devoted much at- tention to making contact with prisoners and recruiting them to the movement. He publishes a special newslet- ter, sent directly to the prisoners, entitled "Beyond the Bars . . . The Stars!" He also arranges for them to receive racist literature and offers to help prisoners with personal "family problems." Miles offers prisoners "a new start" and makes it clear to them that he regards them as victims of ZOG — the cor- rupt and hated federal government with which the separatists consider themselves at war. Prison is described as "but one hazard of any war!' He has also writ- ten that "the Mountain Kirk will not abandon any who are fighting for our Race or who, having strayed, are interested in fighting for the Race in the future!' Other organizations have also made recruiting efforts in the prisons, particularly by supplying prisoners with free subscriptions to their publica- tions. The SS Action Group, for example, said in a 1984 edition of its newsletter, "We of the SS are 'at war' with the Jew-controlled system. Our White brothers and sisters who are prisoners in this war and are currently in- carcerated in our nation's prisons will receive the "Michigan Briefing" at no charge, courtesy of our prison program. However, all dona- tions are appreciated as we are a non-profit organization!' Miles' "ministry" however, is regarded as the most active and the most thorough. But then we got to really know Ted (a long-term member of the SS group). Now we really believe in what we're doing." By far the most significant presence of white power in the state, according to monitors of the movement, is that of Robert Miles and his organizational headquarters outside Howell. Reported by those who have met him to be more intelligent, charming and persuasive than other racist leaders ("I expected to meet a monster. Instead, he reminded me of my grand- father," says Dan Shriner), Miles has demonstrated an ability to bring the various groups together and to forge effective coalitions from disputing factions. As Midwestern head of the Aryan Nations and pastor of the Mountain Church of Jesus Christ the Saviour, Miles has used his Cohoctah farm as a gathering point for activists far beyond the local area, and has traveled exten- sively to meet with other leaders. Although he has formally resigned from membership of the Klan, he has admitted a continuing affinity with the organization. As a leader of the Aryan Nations, he is closely allied with members of the Identity Church, although his own church, sometimes referred to as the Mountain Kirk, is not an Identity church, but follows what Miles calls "Dualism!' Its adherents believe that the two absolute powers of good and evil are locked in combat for supremacy. White Aryans are identified with good and are therefore engaged in a mortal struggle with the Satanic, anti-white forces of evil. "Dualism," says Miles' wife Dorothy, "has existed since the world began, from time immemorial!' Certainly its practice seems to involve a large element of mysticism and myth. The cross-burning gatherings, at which Miles hosts the nation's leading white-power advocates, usual- ly two or three times a year, are sometimes timed to coin- cide with ancient, pagan festivals. Miles' religious writings, published in his bi- monthly newsletter "From the Mountain," are written in a vein reminiscent of fantasy science fiction.
