Puder said, "I believe we're
going to see a slowdown (in
Arab growth)." He attributed
this belief to the fact that the
projections based on birth
rates do not take into account
the Arab emigration from the
territories and " exclude the
possibility that there will be
a massive aliyah from the
Soviet Union."
But will the agenda of
Americans for a Safe Israel
bring peace?"Our goal is not
really peace," Cutler said.
"It's survival."

where to go," affectionately
described the department
store's thorough service. Yet
no sprinklers or alarm system
could be found in the building
that became the victim of
what has been labeled Tren-
ton's worst fire in twenty
years. Local investigators
suspect arson to be the cause
of the blaze.
That fateful evening
marked an unfortunate
chapter in the more favorable
history of the Mulius and
Ellias families.
"As the years go by the
memories of our grand-
parents grow fonder," said
Mulius nearly a week after
the fire.
Meyer Mulius, Isadore's
father, founded the establish-
ment in 1908. Meyer Ellias,
his wife Saydie's older
brother, became his partner
shortly thereafter.
After his father's death in
1952, present owner Stanley
Ellias replaced him as "Mrs.
M's" partner.
Isadore became an owner
after his mother's death in
1980. He remembers his
mother "took great pride in
her association with the peo-
ple in this town." She was the
first recipient of the Trenton
Exchange Club's Book of
Golden Deeds Award.
Mulius certainly followed
his parents' example as a
community lekler. Three
times mayor of Trenton, he
also founded Beth Isaac
Synagogue, originally the
Downriver Jewish Communi-
ty Center."I built the
synagogue for them," he said.
Mulius' maternal grand-
parents, the Elliases, located
on a Michigan farm as part of
the "Jewish social experi-
ment in Bad Axe," he recall-
ed. They grew sugarbeets and
potatoes and were members
of the Palestine Colony
Synagogue in the late 1890s.
"They were ill-prepared for
their trials," he admitted.
And now the families face
similar trials.
