and "elegant buildings" is a
monstrous fabrication. In-
deed, as a critic of organiza-
tions, whose ac-
complishments over the years
have been well-nigh ex-
emplary, Mr. Schick is woeful-
ly miscast. One wonders how
such brazen and unverified
tirades eluded the editor's
wastebasket.

Arafats, Idi Amins or the
Waldheims. Had he refused
the Waldheim meeting, he
would have given a message
to Austria that he expects his
followers to elect represen-
tatives who reflect the best in
humanity, not the worst.
"It would be a stand on
higher principle for the
American Jewish Congress to
meet with the Pope . . . " the
Free Press stated.
Just the opposite is true. It
will be a higher principle to
boycott such a meeting. It is
easy to compromise and ex-
cuse. It is a matter of the
highest principle to let the
world know that the Pontiff's
meeting with Waldheim was
not just an insult to Jews but
to all of mankind which
respects human life and
dignity. The principle calls
for the Pope to meet with
heads of state. The higher
principle calls for him to
avoid meetings with heads of
state who have participated
in the most heinous crimes in
mankind's history.
Hopefully, the American
Jewish groups will not suc-
cumb to any pressure and
meet with the Pope this fall,
and hopefully the Jewish peo-
ple — as one — will let their
voices be heard on this issue.
Silence would be almost as
inexcusable at the Pope-
Waldheim meeting itself.

an effect on the community.
Incidents such as the burning
of bus stops, Orthodox
statements against Conser-
vative and Reform Jewry,
and the Pollard Affair have
changed American Jewish
perceptions.
"The Pollard case was a
monumental, stupid irrespon-
sibility on the part of the
Israelis. Israel doesn't have
the access in Washingon that
it had before Pollard.
Nobody," he said, "asked the
question, 'What is the down
side of this?"'
Fein is a self-described
liberal who recently sold Mo-
ment and will be devoting his
time to writing and lecturing.
His new book, Where Are We:
The Ways of American Jews
will be published next year.
He spoke at a Detroit
seminar and before the
"Breakfast Club" of the
Jewish Welfare Federation
and the United Jewish Ap-
peal Young Leadership
Cabinet last week.
His Jewish audience was
given a long list of Israeli in-
discretions, including a
description of its political
system as lacking "to a
dangerous degree" the ac-
countability needed by
democratic systems. He also
described the average
Israeli's dismay that
American Jews have not suc-
cumbed to the "myths of
classical Zionism": that all
Jews must move to Israel or
be swallowed by a Holocaust
or assimilation.
Fein believes in a more
positive relationship for both
Israeli and American Jews,
one in which both sides have
their eyes open. "We care
about Israel," he said,
"because they are fellow
Jews, mishpocha, family.
Some of the uncles are crazy,
and some of the cousins are
demented, but when they are
in trouble we help them
because they are family.
"The American Jewish
community is capable of lov-
ing Israel. But we have to
remember that love is for bet-
ter or for worse, for richer or
poorer."
