Ethiopian Jews
Have Full Status
New York (JTA) — The
Law Committee of the Rab-
binical Assembly has adopted
a position paper attesting
that Ethiopian Jews are au-
thentic, "full fledged" mem-
bers of the Jewish community
whose status must be recog-
nized by the Chief Rabbinate
of Israel, where 15,000-18,000
Jews of Ethiopian origin now
live.
Rabbi Kassel Abelson,
president of the Rabbinical
Assembly, the rabbinical
organization of Conservative
Judaism, called for an "end
by Israel's chief rabbis to
their objection to the admis-
sion of Ethiopian Jews on
halachic grounds."
He referred specifically to
the chief rabbinate's re-
quirement that many Ethio-
pian Jews, known as Beta Is-
rael, must undergo ritual
immersion before the rabbi-
nate will validate their mar-
riages.

member of the Knesset in-
telligence subcommittee to dis-
sent from its report criticizing
the top political leadership for
mishandling the Jonathan
Pollard spy case has demanded
that his conclusion be append-
ed to the report submitted to
the Knesset two weeks ago,
Haaretz reported June 9.
Yosef Burg, of the National
Religious Party, who was
abroad during most of the
seven-man subcommittee's
deliberations, took issue with
the majority view that Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres bears
most of the blame for the fiasco.

vian Chamber of Deputies
has repudiated the 1975
United Nations General As-
sembly resolution equating
Zionism with racism. Its ac-
tion is considered significant
by observers in view of the
government's left-leaning
position which has been
marked by pronouncements
favoring the Palestine Liber-
ation Organization, the
World Jewish Congress re-
ported. -

mally advised UN Secretary

Cuellar of its action. The
WJC cabled the Peruvian
Ambassador in Washington

stand adopted by the Peru-
