Dayan did not want Israeli sovereignty imposed in per- petuity on the Arabs but, equally, he did not want a Palestinian state and he did not contemplate any cession of territory. He realized that Jew and Arab have to live side-by- side in a very narrow space. On one side, he saw the Jewish state — Israel including Jerusalem; on the other, the Arab state — Jordan. "In that area in between," he told Shipler, "we have to live together, but not to impose one on the other. We should have our forces somewhere there too, to defend Israel, but not in order to interfere with their [the Arabs'] life. On top of the hills we'll have early warning stations, something like that. "We shall pull out the military administration, saying, 'Gentlemen, you are on your own, and unless you turn over your place to the P.L.O. so that it becomes a base for attack against Israel, then we will stay out of your life! We should do it unilaterally." Dayan was not seeking or offering a permanent solution. What Dayan envisaged was a transition period of undetermined duration during which the two peoples would, with the friction of the military occupation removed, learn to coexist with each other peacefully. He was concerned with people, not territorial boundaries. He wanted Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria, asserting that "in the West Bank and in the Gaza Strip we should live together, without us pushing them and without us ruling them!' He would offer the Pales- tinians freedom of choice. "I personally would put it," he told Shipler: "I'll not come unless you ask me nicely and twice. So if you don't want Israeli doctors, if you don't want Hadassah, God bless you. We have enough patients of our own. If you don't want to work in Israel, you don't have to, if you can be better paid in Jordan or on your own. If you do want our experts of the Ministry of Agriculture to work with you about how to grow, under plastic, off-season vegetables and fruits . . . we are ready to cooperate. But if you're not, and either you want to use the Jordanian expert or you want to go your own way, by all means, please yourself!' Realistic Palestinians, Dayan held, knew they could not get a state by military means and must be asking themselves: "Are we better off with the Israeli military administration, or would we be closer to our goal if we had our own council?" Consider this story that was told me by Dr. Hugh Ilstrup of Phoenix, Ariz. He tells of a young lady who was hospitalized for seven and one-half weeks for treatment of a lateral subluxation. In everyday terms, that means that one of the vertebrae in her spine had slipped sideways. And after nearly two months of costly hospital care, what were the results? "Nil," says Dr. Ilstrup. The young lady was no better and no worse than when she was first—admitted for treatment. While each case must be examined on an in- dividual basis, this would appear from the infor- mation available to me to be a classic case for Chiropractic. Lateral subluxations can be and often are treated effectively by Chiropractic. Let me add that, to his credit, the Medical Doctor who treated the young lady recommended against surgery in her case, citing that the risks involved did not warrant such action. This story is just another example of how many people fail to think of Chiropractic first DR. STANLEY when they think of back problems. They wouldn't B. LEVINE call a podiatrist if they had a toothache, and they certainly wouldn't call the dentist in the middle of the night to deliver a baby. Yet they expect to solve their back problems with a pain pill or linaments. Medicine, Dentistry, Osteopathy, and Chiropractic are all recognized by the United States government as legitimate heal- ing arts. Each has its place and plays an important role in the na- tion's health care needs. And when your problem is one involving the nerves, muscles, and spine, Chiropractic is your best defense against future suffering.
