Eat I Handbags Pollard admits "and that was accepting funds." Those funds, he says, were to reimburse him for travel and accommodations for both himself and, often, for his Israeli contacts. The Israelis lived lavishly, the Pollards hinted, renting expensive hotel penthouses on the grounds that the location was more secure for conferences. Dr. and Mrs. Pollard reject the accusation that Jay was out for personal gain. "He drove a six- year-old car, had a modest apartment and no bank ac- count," says Mrs. Pollard. Why have American Jews as a community ignored or de- nounced Pollard? "An older generation of Jews is still not confident that we are first-class citizens, (that we can speak out) without being thought of as Jewish spies," Prof. Dershowitz believes. "I can see that maybe a part of the Jewish population was afraid," Rose Zar maintains. "They thought, 'Don't say anything and maybe it will go away.' But nothing goes away. You have to take a stand." Says Dr. Pollard: "I grew up with the statement, never let your guard down. Keep in mind history." "The important thing is to make Jews understand. This is an onslaught against them as well as Jonathan and Anne," Mrs. Pollard emphasizes. "We live in a very elegant society," Dr. Pollard adds. "But it could easily be reversed with hate. It is incumbent among Jews to protect and demand evenhandedness." That veneer of elegance and evenhandedness seems to have been stripped away during the Pollard affair. And hard ques- tions remain: Why was the in- formation withheld from Israel, supposedly a U.S. ally? And why were Jay and Anne Pollard punished so severely? Jonathan Jay Pollard com- mitted no ordinary crime, but the justice of his punishment remains in question. "He's a prisoner of Zion:' his father says flatly. According to Dr. Robert Jay Lifton, the author of sev- eral books including The Nazi Doctors, the medical profession killed those con- sidered to be racially inferior in order to "heal" the Ger- man nation's "diseased body" SIDEWALK SALE!
