lace. Harvey S. Bronstein

of directors are: Henry Au-
slander, Jacob L. Keidan,

Leopold, Milton S. Marwil,

Stutz and William Wetsman.
In his annual report, Klein
reported that the association
served an increased number
of clients during the fiscal
year ended May 31, with a
total of 228 loans made, as
compared with 127 in the

previous year. Of this total,
80 loans were made for the
Neighborhood Enhancement
Project.
Newly established pro-

Only 5 loans were made to

Hebrew National Denies
Un-Kosher Charges

New York — Hebrew National
Kosher Foods Inc. of New York
is denying a charge by the New
York State Department of
Agriculture and Markets, ac-
companied by a $39,800 fine,
that the company sold non-
kosher meat under a kosher
label in June 1985.
Isidor Pines, president of the
81-year-old company, said in a
recent press conference that the
company has filed suit in New
York State Supreme Court
against the Department for
"altering an official document
and seeking to prosecute an
alleged violation on such an
alteration. We further charge
that the Department has acted
irresponsibly by releasing false
information, creating
misleading innuendo and at-
tempting to convict Hebrew Na-
tional in the press?'
The dispute began with a
routine, unannounced inspec-
tion of the Hebrew National
plant in New York City on June
19, 1985. One of the inspectors
wrote in a report that he found
"boneless meat soaking in hot
water," which the department
now says rendered the meat
non-kosher.
But while at Hebrew Na-
tional, the inspector wrote that
he and the plant's night-time
kashrut supervisor questioned
an employee about the hot
water, and were told "someone
fooled with the water?'
The department allowed the
meat to be processed and sold,
and the plant was found to be
in compliance with state
kashrut regulations.
But almost two years later,
May 8, 1987, the Department of
Agriculture sent a letter to
Hebrew National stating that
two years previously the com-
pany "had, in a stainless steel
tank, approximately 100 pieces
of boneless meat soaking in hot
water, thereby rendering the
meat non-kosher."
Hebrew National was fined
$39,800 to be paid within 10
days or else "evidence of the

alleged violation would be for-
warded to the Attorney General
of the State of New York for the
recovery of the maximum
penalty allowed by law, or for
such other action as he may
conclude the facts warrant?'
Hebrew National refused to
pay, and the letter is now in the
hands of the Attorney General.

Neo-Nazi Faces
Swift Retrial

Toronto (JTA) — Ontario
Attorney General Ian Scott
has promised a swift retrial
for neo-Nazi propagandist
Ernst Zundel, whose 1985
conviction for spreading false
propaganda was overturned
by the Ontario Court of Ap-
peals earlier this year on
technical grounds. Scott made
his announcement after
Canada's Supreme Court de-
clined to hear an appeal by
the Ontario government
against the reversal.
Scott said Zundel will be
tried again for the same of-
fense. He received a 15-
month prison sentence for
violating a section of the
criminal code which bars
spreading "false news."
German-born Zundel, 48, was
found guilty of publishing
and distributing booklets de-
nying the Holocaust occurred.

Visas Granted

New York (JTA) — Yuli
Edelshtein, an important fig-
ure in the unofficial Jewish
education movement in the
Soviet Union, has been
granted an exit visa for Is-
rael, the Student Struggle for
Soviet Jewry (SSSJ) reported.
Edelshtein's wife Tatyana
and daughter Yulia, 12, have
also been given permission to
leave.
