NCJW Will Expand
`Up And Out' Project
"Up and Out," a project of
the National Council of
Jewish Women, Greater De-
troit Section, will expand its
scope to include yearly pro-
gramming for handicapped
Jewish individuals who live
in the inner city.
Barbara Stone, "Up and
Out" chairwoman, says that
beginning this fall the pro-
gram's annual calendar will
include one or two lunchtime
parties for some 50 Project
Outreach clients referred to
NCJW by the Jewish Voca-
tional Service.
The extension of pro-
gramming came following
two events, during the
Jewish New Year holidays
and a springtime party pre-
ceding Shavuoth. The men
and women who attended
ranged in age from 35 to 90.
They have been identified by
JVS as mentally or physi-
cally handicapped.
Stone explains, "Because
they live in the inner city,
most have little or no Jewish
identity, contacts, or
memories. Two-thirds of the
group reside in nursing
homes or small group homes,
and most of them rarely get
to go out. Organizations such
as ours provide their only
contact with the Jewish
community."
Typical of the events
NCJW has on tap for Project
Outreach clients was the May
20 program held at the
NCJW offices in Southfield.
Guests were greeted by a
friendly clown, offered a
hearty lunch, and provided
with a sing-a-long, dancing,
and gifts to take home.
The group is planning at
least nine events for 1987-88,
in addition to Project Out-
reach programming. Already
scheduled are a Sept. 16 box
lunch and bus tour to the De-
troit Zoo and an Oct. 11 con-
cert by the Michigan Opera
Theatre. A Chanukah fashion
show for and by seniors and a
late lunch have also been set.
