Peres Pushes Europe On Peace Conference Paris (JTA) — Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres arrived in London last Monday to begin an eight-day round of meetings with Western European leaders to consolidate their support for an international conference for Middle East peace. Peres and his Labor Party col- leagues favor such a forum as a step to direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab states. But Prime Minister Yit- zhak Shamir and Likud are fiercely opposed. Peres hopes to obtain public backing from European leaders who seem in- clined to favor the plan. During his stay in London, Peres will confer with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Foreign Secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe and Tory and opposition leaders in Parliament. In Paris, he will hold meet- ings with President Francois Mitterrand, Premier Jacques Chirac and Foreign Minister Jean-Vernard Raymond. Peres will visit Bonn to meet with Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Foreign Minister Hans- Dietrich Genscher. He will also visit Switzerland, mainly for a rest, but he has a meeting scheduled in Bern with Foreign Minister Pierre Aubert. However, diplomatic obser- vers expect no movement on the plan for the next six months. Gardner, bet. Coolidge & Greenfield One reason is that the rotating chairmanship of the European Economic Community's (EEC) Council of Ministers will be taken over on July 1 by Den- mark, which is considered the most pro-Israel of the 12 EEC member states and not likely to act unless there is a consensus in Israel. Neo-Nazi Gets Murder Charge Bonn (JTA) — Odfried Hepp, the 29-year-old leader of a neo- Nazi gang described by police as violent and dangerous, has been charged in Frankfurt with the attempted murder of an American soldier. He is also charged with membership in a terrorist organization. Hepp was extradited to West Germany from France last January. According to the state prosecutor, he and others plac- ed explosives under the car of an American soldier in Butz- bach, West Germany in December 1982. The soldier was seriously injured. Hepp's activities include bank robberies, circulating anti-Semitic propaganda and displaying Nazi symbols, accor- ding to police. i7 ANIERICAN CANCER SOCIETY® Herbert Kaufman David Techner Help us keep winning.
