Shamir also said that the audience "could be explained in the world as a kind of legitimization of the (Nazi) crimes . according to the various accusations!" However, although Shamir's Likud party had sent a telegram to the Pope asking him to cancel the audience, Shamir said that because Israel and the Vatican do not have diplomatic relations, "Israel can do nothing but express its unhappiness and regret about this negative move.,, In other developments, the Vatican said that it is "surprised and pro- foundly grieved" that the planned meeting of the Pope and Waldheim at the Vatican has raised doubts about "The Holy Father's respect for the Continued on Page 16 Council To Pair Families For 50th Matching families for the Community Council's anniversary could boost inter-group relations Staff Report American Prisoner Of Zion In an exclusive interview, Jonathan Pollard's family breaks its silence The Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit will take a unique approach to its 50th anniver- sary celebrations this fall. The Coun- cil is going to match 200 Jewish families with 200 families from the Arab, black, Polish and Hispanic com- munities in the Detroit area for three anniversary events. "We wanted to make it a little more than the usual pat-ourselves-on- the-back kind of thine said Jewish Community Council president Leon Cohan. The major celebration Oct. 22 at Orchestra Hall will be preceded by two meetings in Septemeber between the Jewish and non-Jewish families. On Sept. 8, the families will meet at an informal gathering sponsored by the Council. On Sept. 20, the Jewish families will host their non-Jewish counterparts. The Sept. 20 meetings in Jewish homes will be devoted to informal discussions, Cohan said, "so that peo- ple can get to know each other per- sonally on a one-to-one basis. They will talk about our community's aspirations and their communities' aspirations." The anniversary celebrations are being co-chaired by Carole Rossen and Berl Falbaum.
