This group affiliation benefits both parties: the organizations' members all join the JCC while retaining their own boards of directors; the center runs the program and provides key ser- vices, such as the talents of youth director Bobbi Heilveil. The Adsociation continues to support those affiliated organizations which it had previously funded. Hoffer points out that in a Jewish federation community, which Ann Arbor is not, these groups would be funded by the federation. At the moment, the JCC's strength lies in its programm- ing for Jewish toddlers, youth and seniors. Although the staff is minimal, the center is able to offer a wide variety of programs since any member can create a group — like the Yiddish Club or the Jewish Businessperson's Group — for which there is an interest. Youth groups, whether temple-affiliated or indepen- dent; are welcome to • use the center gym and other facilities in exchange for community ser- vices, such as working with the senior outreach program. The center is especially proud to be showcasing a major exhibit on the history of the Jews in Michigan in September. Will the new center polarize the Ann Arbor Jewish com- munity? It is a small yet active community, with numerous groups and projects vying for time and members. Laurence Smith hopes that the center will serve to inspire the com- munity, and cites the increased levels of giving and awareness in other cites with new centers. - Jeffery Pike, former president of the JCCouncil and now on both the Association and the JCC boards, would like to see all the organizations in the community work together, and hopes that the community will not be fragmented. At the Association, some caution that for the center to work, it must work closely with the associa- tion in the area of planning something the old JCCouncil was not always able to do.The synagogues do not seem - to regard competition with the JCC as a problem. As Temple Beth Emeth's Alan Cotzin points out, "The foundation of a Jewish community . . . is its temples"; the center is seen as an enhancement, not a com- petitor. Rabbi Levy feels that people can be involved in both places, and that there are plen- ty of people who have yet to be involved. The future of the new JCCenter will depend on the role it chooses to play within the community, and the extent to which it persuades its critics that it is an essential part of Jewish life in Ann Arbor. ill A' We can arrange everything from clowns through clean-up!
