NATHAN AND ESTHER KORMAN BUILDING In 1986, Machon L'Torah was the beneficiary of a special and generous gift specifically intended for the purchase of an outreach center in our Jewish community. The funds were provided in memory of Nathan and Esther Korman, dedicated and commit- ted Jews who understood the need to wage battle against the tide of assimilation. The facilty located on Ten Mile Road in Oak Park, will house our library, administrative offices, study lounge, synagogue and learning center. Many of our fine supporters have already begun to aid in our effort to complete the struc- ture. Of particular note is the recent gift from the families of Mr. Leonard Borman and Mr.Paul D. Borman which allows us to begin construction of the lecture hall addition. If you wish to eternalize the memory of a loved one by bridging our nation's heroic past, with a promising future, you may do so by donating the following gifts. It is at this time that the young adult must make the most crucial decisions regarding his or her future: socially, spiritually and profes- sionally. The Learning Network of Michigan has launched a college assault program to listen, to guide, to counsel, to educate, and to reawaken the warmth of Jewish unity amongst the campuses' students. . . . In addition to the regularly scheduled classes, over twenty special events have been held on Michigan campuses during the fall/winter semesters. The following is a sampl- ing of some of these events. . . . On November 7, 1986, a special weekend was held on the M.S.U. campus. Enthusiasm was the response as close to fifty students join- ed the Machon L'Torah staff in the very special atmosphere of a Friday night Shabbat dinner. The delicious meals, the songs, the discussions and the general feeling of elevation that mark- ed the entire Shabbaton "left a deep impres- sion, an experience never to be forgotten," to quote one of the participants. Special thanks to the B'nai B'rith Hillel staff who were wonderful hosts. . . . A united effort orchestrated by Machon L'Torah, the Jewish Learning Network of Michigan, organized by the AEpi Fraternity, the SDT Sorority and the Hillel Jewish Students organization at East Lansing was a joint brunch on Sunday, March 8, 1987. The ratings by the students: an overwhelming suc- cess. The only complaint received was — too much good food. The discussion led by Rab- bi Jacobovitz sparked an intense debate on the theme of Jewish Belief: Myths and Realities. To the group of students who filled the reception room of the AEpi Fraternity of University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, on March 17, 1987, the shock, the revelations and the inspiration were incredible. They were presented with the bittersweet truth of Jewish struggle and revival in atheist Russia,-led by Rabbi Dr. Jerry Teller, dean of Midrasha, and enhanced by his slide show. Rabbi Teller spoke of the unusual experiences that he and his wife, who had recently returned from a visit to Russia, encountered. Students left the even- ing program determined to become more in- volved in the struggle for Jewish survival. . . . "Why should we celebrate an event three and a half thousand years old?" asked one of the participants at the Passover seminar spon- sored by Machon L'Torah at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant at the Bovee Stu- dent Center. "My dear friend," responded Rabbi Jacobovitz, "the event is not three and a half thousand years old but rather three and a half thousand years long ..." and so the discussion continued well into the night, mak- ing this year's Passover celebration so much more meaningful for those who attended this Machon educational forum. NEW STAFF Due to a special funding grant from the Avi- Chai foundation of New York, Machon L'Torah is pleased to announce that two new members have been added to our staff effective September 1, 1987. Rabbi Shmuel Zimmerman will assume the position of administrator and Rabbi Menachem Z. Greenfield will become the director of our community enrichment program. •■■■••■■•■•1 23
