Bankrupt
Brothers

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
economic empire of Jonathan
and Yoav Hurvitz, sons of
Minister Yigael Hurvitz, a
former Finance Minister — col-
lapsed last week, as the Tel
Aviv District Court announced
their bankruptcy-.
The 'court appointed a li-
quidator of their companies, to
act as receiver for the brothers
personal assets, and issued an
order prohibiting them from
leaving the country, at the re-
quest of Bank Leumi, the
brothers main creditor.
The brothers are believed to
owe the banks some $40
million, more than their assets
are worth.
The Hurvitz empire extended
from real estate to agricultural
enterprises and financial ac-
tivities in the non-bank or
"grey" market.
Hurvitz was minister of
finance in the government of
Menahem Begin. He resigned
in protest over the difficulties
implementing his austerity
policy. Following the last
Knesset elections, Hiu-vitz clos-
ed ranks with the Alignment,
but recently has reached an
agreement with the Likud
assuring him and his number
two on his Ometz list, safe seats
in the next elections. It is
unclear whether Yigael Hur-
vitz has any stake in the
business of his sons.
