"Build a better mousetrap,
and the world will beat a
path to your door." Five-
year-old Zevi Steinmetz of
Oak Park didn't quite follow
the old adage exactly, but his
path next week will lead to
Washington, D.C.
Zevi, a kindergartner at
Akiva Hebrew Day School in
Southfield, invented a better
popsicle "drip catcher." Sim-
ply cutting a cardboard con-
tainer top and slipping it
over a popsicle stick has
earned Zevi $300 in savings
bonds, a $500 grant for his
kindergarten, $750 more for
Akiva as a whole, $1,500 for
the Southfield school district
and $2,500 for the State of
Michigan. That's not a bad
drip catcher for a five-year-
old.
In addition, Zevi will spend
next week in Washington
with his parents and his
teacher at the second annual
Invent America! Week spon-
sored by the U.S. Patent
Model Foundation. The trip is
all expenses paid.
Cynthia Gould, general
studies principal at Aki -va,
said 40 students participated
in the contest this year as

part of a science fair at the
school. A winner was picked
in each grade in early May
by science teacher Norbert
Vance and Akiva parent
Kenneth Kohn, a patent at-
torney. Photographs of the
winning entries were for-
warded to state and regional
competitions. Zevi was one of
three Michigan winners in
the ten-state region, earning
the trip to Washington for
himself, his parents Allan
and Sarina, and teacher Les-
lie Fishman. Teacher Phyllis
Koenigsberg was also elgible
for the trip.
The Akiva delegation faces
a busy week of activities
while Zevi's invention vies
for a national prize. Included
are tours of the city and con-
gressional visits. Sarina
Steinmetz believes her
youngest son is taking the
whole thing in stride, al-
though he has become some-
thing of a celebrity for his
brothers Naftali, 11, and
Shimmy, 9. "But Zevi has a
congressional ice cream social
on the schedule that he is
very much prepared for,"
Sarina said, with a whole
supply of Steinmetz Drip
Catchers prepared for sticky
action.

Committees In Place
For Rabbis' Dinner

Paul Borman, general chair-
man, and Judge Avern Cohn,
Leonard Borman, and David
Hermelin, associate chairmen,
have announced committees for
the Council of Orthodox Rabbis
57th anniversary banquet,
June 29, honoring Rabbi -
Chaskel Grubner.
The honorary chairman for
the event is Max Fisher. Spon-
sor chairmen are Harold Bez-
nos, David Holtzman and
Nathan Soberman. Dr.
Lawrence Loewenthal, Royal
Oppenheim and David Pollack
will serve as patron chairmen.
The Congregation Committee

is headed by Fred Ruby,
Seymour Greenstein and
William Berlin.
Proceeds from the dinner help
support the council's communi-
ty services throughout the year:
chaplaincy services, rabbinical
court, supervision of adoption,
conversion, marriage, divorce
and kashrut.

The annual dinner will be
held June 29 at the Westin
Hotel. Guest speaker will be
Richard Shifter, assistant

Frenkel Meeting Set
For The AJCongress

The role of the American
Jewish community in shaping
U.S. foreign policy toward
Africa will be addressed by
Congressman Howard Wolpe
at the annual Rose Frenkel
meeting of the American
Jewish Congress on Monday
at 8 p.m. at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek. The evening will
begin at 7 p.m. with a recep-

tion in the Rose Frenkel
courtyard.
Congressman Wolpe (D-
Kalamazoo) is chairman of
the House Subcommittee on
Africa of the Foreign Affairs
Committee. He is the driving
force in maintaining de-
velopmental aid for sub-
Saharan countries and was
the architect of the legisla-
