Louis Menk,
Architect
Louis Menk, an architect
with Albert Kahn Associates
for 40 years, died June 12 at
age 78.
Born in Newark, N.J., Mr.
Menk had been a vice
president and treasurer of the
firm. He joined the Kahn
company in 1942 as project
manager.
Before coming to Detroit,
Mr. Menk was assistant pro-
fessor of architecture and
assistant dean of the school of
architecture at New York
University, where he earned
undergraduate and profes-
sional degrees.
He was awarded the
Michigan Society of Ar-
chitects gold medal in 1971
"for professional leadership."
Mr. Menk was a member of
the College of Fellows of the
American Institute of Ar-
chitects.
He was an authority on
administration of construc-
tion contracts and on the
panel of arbitrators of the
American Arbitration Asso-
ciation.
He leaves his wife, Olga;
two daughters, France of
Pound Ridge, N.Y., and Doris
Lunsky; two sisters, Mrs.
Mary Weisstein and Mrs.
Jeannett Epstein; and two
grandchildren.
Tuvia Bielsky,
Partisan Leader
New York — Tuvia (Bell)
Bielsky, leader of what be-
came known as Bielsky's
Brigade during World War II,
died June 12 at age 81.
Mr. Bielsky was the leader
of an armed band of Jewish
partisans in Nazi-occupied
Byelorussia. The band har-
bored Jewish families and
conducted raids against the
German occupiers. One of the
largest partisan groups in the
region, Bielsky's Brigade dis-
banded in 1944.
Since the war, Mr. Bielsky
had immigrated to Israel and
later to the U.S.
Walter Heller,
Economic Adviser
Washington — Walter Hel-
ler, chief economic adviser of
Presidents Kennedy and
Johnson, died June 15 at age
71.
Retired professor of eco-
nomics at the University of
Minnesota, Mr. Heller was
known for his drive in the
early 1960s to enact sweeping
cuts in personal and business
income taxes.
