Y1 Teens Win
Awards, Honors

Young Israel Teens has given
the Lou Horowitz Award for
outstanding involvement in the
community to Jodi Frances, an
11th grader at Yeshivat Akiva
in Southfield. She will continue
her Jewish education next year
in Israel.
The Young Israel Teens
chapter gave its Meritorious
Service Award to Jodi Frances,
Rachel Paholak, Steven Arnold
and Micha Zwick, all of
Yeshivat Akiva. They will
spend 12th grade in Israel.
At the annual regional con-
vention in Cleveland, Steven
Arnold of Yeshivat Akiva won
a Meritorious Service Award.
The Torah Achievement
Award is given to those
NCSY'ers who in the past year
have demonstrated a notable
growth and development in
Torah observance. Gil Stebbins
of Southfield Lathrup Senior
High School and a membei of
Cong. Shomrey Emunah receiv-
ed the award.
YIT received the community
service award.

The Akiva Hebrew Day
School chess club has become
an affiliate member of the U.S.
Chess Federation (USCF).
The Akiva Chess Club joins
more than 1,300 chess
organizations across the coun-
try in becoming part of the
USCF. Membership entitles the
Akiva Chess Club to sponsor
USCF-rated tournaments
under the supervision of na-
tionally certified tournament
directors.
The Akiva Chess Club, head-
ed by faculty members Jeffrey
Conn and Rabbi Levy Van
Leeuwen, was established with
a gift from Phillip Applebaum.

Society elected officers at its
annual luncheon. They are:
