gious School recently held its
annual graduation cere-
monies. Rabbi Irwin Groner
spoke to the graduates on the
importance of Jewish educa-
tion in their lives, and Edu-
cation Director Marvin
Kasoff and High School
Coordinator Mark Eichner,
presented the diplomas to the
graduates.

The synagogue presented a
number of awards to out-
standing students in • the reli-
gious school during gradua-
tion ceremonies. Honorees
were: Matthew Miller (12th
grade), Tamara Stillman
(11th grade), Sally Coleman
(10th grade), Jared Hoffert
(ninth grade), David Ingber
(eighth grade), and Howard
Krugel (seventh grade).
The recipient of the Na-
tional Federation of Jewish
Men's Clubs Youth Academic
Award was Michael Pont, son
of Herb and Janet Pont.
Several students received .
awards as winners of the Jef-
frey Weisberg Memorial
Creative Writing Contest.
The winners were: In the
high school department, Scott
Matasar (first prize) and Jeff
Covensky (second prize); in
junior high, Matthew
Matasar (first prize) and
Marsha Harris (second prize);
and in the elementary de-
partment, Jennifer Kaplan
(first prize) and Jaime Krugel
(second prize).

Regional NCSY
President Elected

Julie
Kowalsky,
an
eleventh grader at Southfield
High School, was elected
regional president of the Cen-
tral East Region of the Na-
tional Conference of
Synagogue Youth at the
regional convention which
took place over Memorial
Day weekend in Cleveland,
Ohio. Julie has been an
active member of NCSY for
many years and has served
as president of the B'nai
David Tikvah NCSY chapter.
Joel Kruger, a tenth grader
at Akiva Day School, was
elected vice president for the
Junior NCSY Regional Pro-
gram. Joel is a member of the
Young Israel Teens Chapter
of NCSY.

Detroiter Plans
Weizmann Study

Jennifer Sparling, of Union
Lake, a senior at Detroit
Country Day School, will go
to Israel this summer to take
part in a program of science
lectures and laboratory work
at the Weizmann Institute of
Science.
Jennifer won the Engineer-
ing Society of Michigan Sci-
ence Fair and was awarded
the Paul and Marlene Bor-
man Scholarship for her sci-
ence summer in Israel.
