Paris (JTA) — A crude,
anonymous leaflet accusing
"young Israeli mercenaries"
of introducing and spreading
AIDS (Acquired Immune
Deficiency Syndrome) in
Western Europe and the rest
of the world, is being widely
distributed among French
high school students, it was
reported last week.
But there. is more serious
concern over a pamphlet
issued by the respected
French League Against Sex-
ually Transmissible Diseases"
which implies that Jews are
somehow responsible for the
fatal ailment for which no
cure has yet been found.
The pamphlet claims that
Kaposi's sarcoma, one of the
earliest symptoms of AIDS,
is an affliction of elderly
Jewish patients. While the
latter are not accused of
spreading AIDS, the infer-
ence has been deplored by
civil rights organizations.
The tracts appearing in
high schools are clearly anti-
Semitic in intent. Some hand-
written, others badly typed,
they are signed by "The Anti-
AIDS Committee." The stu-
dents are urged to "pass the
word."
Holland Beats
Israeli Cagers
In Tournament
Athens (JTA) — The Israeli
national basketball team lost
to Holland in the European
Championship tournament
last week, 61-60, dropping its
record to 1-1.
The game was considered
the worst of the five played
since the tournament began.
For 11-and-a-half minutes in
the second half, Holland did
not score, allowing Israel to
tie at 4949. Journalists pres-
ent consider the time without
a point a world record. Israel
had the ball 18 seconds re-
maining in the game and
down by one point, but could
not produce.
Israel fared better in the
opening game, defeating
Czechoslovakia, 99-83. There
was little to cheer about for
the Israelis during the first
half, as they appeared apa-
thetic, barely holding a 44-40
lead. But they pumped the
second half with enthusiasm
and 55 points. Doron Jamsi
led the Israelis with 37 points
against the Czechs and 36
points against Holland.
In upcoming championship
games, Israel still faces West
Germany, Italy and Poland.
