School Ruling

New York (JTA) — 'No Na-
tional Jewish organizations
last week filed friend-of-the-
court briefs asking the U.S.
Supreme Court to uphold a
federal appeals court ruling
that a New Jersey law requir-
ing state school employees to
direct a moment of silence in
public schools classrooms is
unconstitutional.
The briefs were filed in the
case of Karcher v. May by the
Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith and the Amer-
ican Jewish Congress both of
which maintain that the New
Jersey legislation was
enacted "solely for religious
purposes" to circumvent the
separating clause which bans
organized prayer in public
schools.
The AJCongress brief was
signed by the American
Jewish Committee the Union
of American Hebrew Con-
gregations, People for the
American Way and the Na-
tional Jewish Community
Relations Advisory Council,
an umbrella group represent-
ing 125 Jewish communal
organizations.
The ADL was joined in its
brief by Americans for
Religious Liberty, a national
educational organization
defending religious liberty.

Arab Announces
Candidacy
In Jerusalem

Jerusalem (JTA) — Hanna
Seniora, the Palestinian
editor who seeded a storm of
controversy with his an-
nouncement that he would
seek a seat in the Jerusalem
City Council in the next elec-
tions, appears to be having
second thoughts. He told the
English Sunday edition of his
newspaper, the East Jeru-
salem Arabic daily Al-Fajr,
that his decision to run was
not final. He said his an-
nouncement was, in fact, in-
tended to shock the Israeli
and Palestinian communities
and force them "to think."
Seniora, 49, a leading in-
tellectual and supporter of
the Palestine Liberation
Organization though not a
member, said his announce-
ment was not coordinated
with the PLO.
It drew fierce criticism
from pro-PLO elements. The
East Jerusalem daily A-
Shaab, which reflects the
views of the radical wing of El
Fatah, called Seniora's plan
naive and simplistic.
