Gifts that are as
wonderful to live with as
they are to behold
from . . .

area with a discussion of its im-
portance for subsequent world
history. Through Doorways you
can enter into areas already
familiar and read new mean-
ings into the stones; or you can
enter ancient ruins never
before visited and have them
come vividly alive. Then with
appetite whetted to learn more
about these monuments, you
can be further guided by the
bibliography at the end of the
book.
Naturally in a book of this
length, the presentations for
each site cannot be exhaustive,
but each section does indeed
give a reliable and exciting
view of the particular scene. In
Chapter 9 on the Etruscans,
those enigmatic ancestors of
the Romans, Bertman says,
"As the funeral procession
descended the steep staircase to
the crypt, long shadows thrown
by the light of oil lamps must
have danced on the frescoes
walls. Lit by the flickering
flames, images of painted
dancers moved with graceful
animation in time with silent
rhythms. Warmed in orange
glow, pairs of painted ban-
queters, ruddy-complexioned
men and fair-skinned wives,
reclined on couches and em-
braced eternally!"
In Chapter 11 on Masada,
Bertman rightly bases his
reconstruction of the dramatic
fall of the mountain retreat on
the account of Josephus, the on-
ly written record of the tragic
events so graphically docu-
mented by the ramp and the
bridged casemate wall. But af-
ter he recreates Eleazar ben-
Yair according to Josephus,
Bertman cautiously adds the
scholarly reminder that the
story may have been an inven-
tion of Josephus, who was liv-
ing comfortably in Rome at the
time, far from the events he so
dramatically describes.
The summary of excavation
at Masada is a testimony to the
international enthusiasm for
archaeology and Yigael Yadin's
genius in organization. The
concluding excerpt from
Ezekiel's prophecy unearthed
at the site is echoed in actual
excavation at Masada and in
Israel's rebirth, "Thus saith the
Lord God unto these bones:
Behold, I will cause breath to
enter into you, and ye shall
live!'
Such is the kind of exciting
adventure in store if you who
accept Bertman's invitation to
walk through his Doorways.
You will enter into worlds made
alive and real with Bertman as
guide, knowing into what parts
of the world to travel further in
time and space, either through
reading or through actual visits
to archaeological sites. Look up
the current offering of ar-
chaeological opportunities in
the January-February issue of
"Biblical Archaeology Review!'
You may even want to sign in-
to a dig yourself.
