Brotherhood of Man

•

Nathan Rapoport attained
fame in cultural triumphs half
a century ago. His works are
monumental. The immense
work retaining the story of
heroism and resistance in the
Warsaw Ghetto has been visi-
ble for many years in the area
of the ruins memorialized with
great dignity.
Only five weeks ago, one of
his very great works,
"Brotherhood of Man," was
dedicated in Ramat Gan, Israel,
at the formal opening of the
Magen David Adorn Israel Na-
tional Blood Center. It was
unveiled at the Sally and
Joseph Handleman Plaza of the
Blood Center. Magen David
Adorn leaders from several na-
tions as well as Israel par-
ticipated in the dedication
ceremonies. Now Israel and
world Jewry pay memorial
tributes to Nathan Rapoport.
His sudden death on June 4
brought sadness to those who
were with him at the
ceremonies in Israel less than
a month ago. It marks deep
sadness over so great a loss to
the world of art.
Israel's prideful possession of
Rapoport's "Brotherhood of
Man" was made possible by the
gift of former Detroiters,
presently residents of Florida,
Sally and Joseph Handleman.
The hundreds of participants at
the statue's dedication includ-
ed a large delegation from the
Detroit area, headed by Dr.
John and Mrs. Eva Mames.
To the glory of the Rapoport
name and his achievements
should be appended the list of
his sculptures which have been
dedicated to and had a chief
aim of confronting terror with
dignity, in the works he envi-
sioned as Holocaust memorials.
Among the unforgettable are:
"Job," Yad Vashem,
Jerusalem; "Scroll of Fire,"
in the Judean Hills, Israel;
"Monument to the Six
Million Jewish Martyrs,"
Philadelphia; "Memorial in
Memory of the Jewish
