THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

There are two kinds of
turkey breast, smoked and a
natural breast which is
cooked on the premises.
Sides of cole slaw and potato
salad or potato chips are
available, and the soups,
chili and an assortment of
homemade entrees are in
the freezer ready to reheat
at home.
SARA'S DELI: 24980
Coolidge at Ten Mile Road,
Oak Park. Phone —
545-6320 or 545-6321.
Hours: Sunday - Thursday
10:30 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday
10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Closed on
Saturday evenings for the
summer. The new kid on the
block is a glatt kosher deli
under the supervision of the
Council of Orthodox Rabbis
and owned by Morris and
Ruth Goodman. An attrac-
tive restaurant decorated in
neutral tones offset by hang-
ing plants and art by Ebgi,
Sara's boasts an extensive
menu with 50 sandwiches in
addition to burgers, coney
dogs and subs, plus soups,
salads, appetizers, side
dishes, dinners, desserts and
a "kinder corner" for those
under 12.
The restaurant seats 58
and has been kosher since
just before Passover, though
it opened in September
1986. A stand with a cup
and water is provided for the
observant as well as party
rye bread for hamotzi.
Laminated copies of the
blessings after meals are
tucked in between the ket-
chup bottles and salt and
pepper shakers. Men in yar-
mulkes and business suits
confer over corned beef
while black men in
workclothes and women
wearing head coverings wait

in line for carry outs.
"The nice thing about
Sara's is the customer mix,"
said Goodman. "About 75
percent are Orthodox and
about 25 percent are our old
customers." Goodman feels
his restaurant is as kosher
as anyone would want it.
The full-time mashgiach
keeps the keys to the freezer,
the beef is glatt kosher and
the chickens are Adas.
Lunchtime waits aren't
too bad, but dinner
customers can expect at
least a half-hour wait at the
height of dinner hour. The
Goodmans are hoping to ex-
pand next door.
Everything at Sara's is
made from scratch, and
Goodman says customers
are 98 percent satisfied.
"There's no reason for
kosher not to be quality," he
said. "We are looking to
satisfy just about everyone.
We are here and we ap-
preciate our customers. We
don't overcharge or take the
attitude that the customer
should appreciate us
because we are here."
Sandwich prices were
recenty increased by 25' and
dinner prices by $1. A Din-
ty Moore at Sara's is $4.25
compared to $4.20 at the
(non-kosher), Stage in Oak
Park, and $4.25 at the (non-
kosher) Bread Basket in
Oak Park. The roast chicken
dinner at Sara's, which
comes with soup or salad,
farfel and vegetables, runs
$7.90 compared to $6.15 for
roast chicken with soup,
salad, potato and vegetable
at the Bread Basket, and
$6.15 for roast chicken with
soup or salad or cole slaw
plus potato and vegetable at
the Stage.
