Fannie Saulson Helped
Start Detroit Hadassah

With her sister Sally
(Sarah) Davidson, Fannie
Wetsman Saulson was among
the top leaders for more than
40 years in elevating the
cause of Hadassah and re-
lated movements on behalf of
Israel. The two sisters were
like twins, although Sally
was 18 months older. From
the moment when the hus-
bands of these two prominent
women were killed in an
automobile accident in 1941
while they were on their way
to a golf game, the two had
remained inseparable.
Neither of the sisters remar-
ried after the tragic deaths of
their husbands.
When Sally Davidson was
secretary of the Zionist
Organization of Detroit back
in 1918, her sister Fannie
often accompanied her to
meetings presided over by
Rabbi A. M. Hershman at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek on
Willis and Brush. Fannie
Saulson, like her sister Sally,
played a major role in the es-
tablishment of the present
Hadassah headquarters with
gifts by their families. Both
Fannie and her sister
traveled together to Israel.
During the past half cen-
tury, there was hardly a pub-
lic function in Detroit, both
congregational and pro-Israel
that the two sisters didn't
attend together.
A founding member of the
Greater Detroit Chapter of
Hadassah, Fannie Saulson
died June 2 at age 95. Born
in What Cheer, Iowa, Mrs.
Saulson was raised in Os-
caloosa, Iowa, and came to
Detroit when she was of mar-
riageable age. She married
Morse Saulson in 1923 and
lived in Lorain, Ohio, for one
year prior to returning to De-
troit.
Mrs. Saulson was the trea-
surer of the United Hebrew
Schools for eight years and
held the presidency of the
Detroit Chapter of Hadassah
