Mrs. Linda Weiss of North
Hollywood, Calif., formerly of
Livonia, announces the engage-
ment of her daughter, Susan, to
Mark Jay Shannon, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Herbert Shannon of
Baltimore, Md., and the late
Bertha Shannon.
Susan, daughter of the late
Merle Weiss, earned a B.A.
degree at Wayne State Univer-
sity and a Master of Occupa-
tional Therapy degree at Texas
Woman's University. She is cur-
rently employed at the Los
Angeles Shriners Hospital for
Crippled Children.
Her fiance is a published ar-
tist and sculptor. He is current-
ly pursuing studies toward a se-
cond career as a physician's
assistant.
A Labor Day wedding in
California is planned.
Human Rights Specialist
Addresses Rabbis' Event
The Council of Orthodox Rab-
bis of Greater Detroit an-
nounces that Richard Schifter,
assistant secretary of state for
human rights and
humanitarian affairs, will be
the guest speaker at the coun-
cil's 57th annual dinner June
29 at the Westin Hotel.
Schifter, together with
Secretary of State George
Shultz, participated in the
Soviet Union Passover Seder at
Spaso House, residence of the
U.S. ambassador to the Soviet
Union.
During 1984-1985, Schifter
served as deputy United States
representative in the Security
Council of the United Nations,
with the rank of ambassador.
From 1983 to 1986 he also held
the position of United States
member of the United Nations
Human Rights Commission.
A lawyer by profession,
Schifter practiced law in
Washington, D.C. from 1951 un-
til his entry into full-time
government service.
Schifter participated for
many years in the educational
affairs of his home state of
Maryland as a citizen member
of various boards and commis-
sions. His service encompassed
Richard Schiffer
20 years of membership on the
Maryland State Board of
Education, including eight
years as the board's vice presi-
dent and four years as
president.
He also served on the ex-
ecutive committee of the board
of visitors of the Maryland
School for the Deaf, as chair-
man of the Governor's Commis-
sion for the funding of the
education of handicapped
children and as chairman of the
Maryland Values Education
Commission.
