nvins Bat Mitzvah

Bonnie Wolfe, daughter of
Marilyn and Samuel Wolfe, will
twin the observance of her bat
mitzvah celebration at Adat
Shalom Synagogue on Satur-
day with Maya Lekhtman,
daughter of Tzivia and Solomon
Lekhtman of Beltsy, USSR.
In October 1972, Maya's
father, Solomon, applied to
emigrate to Israel with his
parents. They were all denied
permission because of
Lekhtman's army service,
which would last until 1970.
Maya's parents were married
in 1973, and in 1974 the fami-
ly once again applied for exit
visas. They wre refused in June
1974, but after several appeals,
Maya's grandparents were
granted permission to leave for
Israel. The Soviets
"guaranteed" that Maya's
father would be permitted to
see his parents shortly
thereafter.
Her father lost his job when
he applied for an exit visa. Her
mother has not been able to
work since Maya's sister was
born.
Bonnie has written several
times to Maya and she will at-
tempt to contact the family by
telephone and send con-
gratulatory wishes to their
relatives in Israel.

Seven adult b'not mitzvah
twinned their ceremonies with
Janna Lerner of Moscow at
Shavuot services Wednesday at
Adat Shalom Synagogue.
The b'not mitzvah were: Alita
Cyrlin, Esther Dines, Susan
Graham, Ruby Kushner, Linda
O'Desky, Shoshana Wolok and
Sylvia Starkman.
Married to Valery Lerner —
in Russia she is known by the
surname Polulyakh — Mrs.
Lerner is a graduate engineer.
She was forced out of her job
when she and her husband first
applied for an exit visa. Her
husband is a graduate of the
Moscow Aviation Institute.
They were first refused in 1976.
Since refusal, Lerner has been
a parking lot guard and a
masseur.
In 1985, Lerner suffered a
minor stroke, but is reported to
be well. Earlier this year, Mrs.
Lerner went on a brief hunger
strike with Rima Yakin,
mother of former refusenik
Alex Yakin.
Meanwhile, the Lerners' son,
Igor, is 16 and soon will face the
military. Letters to request the
family's release should be sent
