THE WRITE WORD

If you find the right gift a chore
And written words don't flow for you,
Let the "write words" from my pen pour.
To make a portrait fresh and new.
A character sketch I will create,
To mark whatever you celebrate.
So let my "Write Words" speak for you,
And convey portraits, Oh so true!

the song David Melech Yisrael
over and over. Their joy was con-
tagious, infectious.
"People were singing and
dancing at the Wall. It was a
moment that I never forgot and
I never will."
Tukel and Friedman felt a
strong sense of fulfillment and
satisfaction about their con-
tribution to Israel. "I wanted to
help fill the need," Tukel said.
"It was a wonderful learning
experience."
"There is a tremendous feel-
ing of satisfaction that our
physical participation con-
tributed to the well-being of the
country," Friedman said. "By
being there we made economic
sacrifices, but we gained a
physical identity. It was an
enormous experience, especial-
ly in the relationships we made
and the things we saw."
Both Tukel and Friedman
recall their concern for the
future of Israel as the motive
for their commitment. "I grew
up with a strong Jewish iden-
tity," Tukel said. "I've been in-
volved in Jewish activities all
my life. I felt I had to do more
than attend rallies and send
money.
"I believe there are certain
issues where you have to put
yourself on the line. I felt it had
to be done."
Friedman recalls a sermon by
Rabbi Irwin Groner at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek as the catalyst
for his decision to volunteer.
"The war awakened a feeling in
me. Initially, I had a fear that
Israel would be obliterated. I
felt a kinship with the Jewish
people. In addition to being a
religion, Judaism is a
peoplehood. I related to the peo-
ple at risk, and Allison and I
wanted to express our concern
by contributing our help and
our time."
Tukel agrees. "I'm not sure if
the commitment is to the
Jewish people, or the whole
Jewish history. It could be . one
and the same." ❑
