"Herb's Reliable Service"

THOUSE CALLS MADE

FOR NAIL AND FOOT CARE

perhaps years of tension be-
tween Gordis and senior staff,
officers and lay people drew
to a close.
Ellenoff said the major
reason for the termination,
which he and six other of-
ficers decided on in April, was
personality conflicts between
senior staff members and
Gordis.
Gordis could not be reached
for comment and has not
returned repeated phone calls.
Two months prior to the
decision to fire Gordis,
Ellenoff said three senior
staff members who worked
directly under Gordis in-
formed the AJC committee of
their intentions to resign. He
declined to name them. When
officers learned of the staf-
fers' decisions, the final deter-
mination to fire Gordis was
made.
Ellenoff asked Gordis to
resign on April 24. When he
refused, Ellenoff fired him.
Gordis asked the officers to
vote on the decision. Six
voted to fire him, one against.
Gordis then asked that the
matter be taken to the full
board of governors, a move
which Ellenoff said was not
at all unusual.

Beatification
Criticized

Jerusalem — The beatifica-
tion of Edith Stein by Pope
John Paul II highlights the
church's "arrant insensitivity"
to the Jewish heritage, accor-
ding to Rabbi David Rosen,
former chief rabbi of Ireland
and Anti-Defamation League
interfaith relations director.
The memorialization of Stein,
a Jewish-born converted nun
who perished in the Holocaust,
is "an imperialist takeover of
our Holocaust martyrs by the
Catholic Church," said Rabbi
Rosen.

Space Mezuzah
Now In Museum

New York (JTA) — A
mezuzah that has orbited the
earth 109 times came to rest
at the New York Jewish
Museum. Astronaut Dr. Jef-
frey Hoffman, who took the
mezuzah into space two years
ago on the shuttle Discovery,
made the presentation of the
unearthly mezuzah to the
Jewish Museum.
Hoffman, an identifying
Jew and active member of a
synagogue in Houston, Tex.,
said he wanted to make this
special, referring to the tradi-
tion of taking personal pos-
sessions into space to be
brought back as unusual
mementos.
