Jerusalem (JTA) — U.S.
Ambassador Thomas Picker-
ing voiced strong American
disapproval last week of what
he implied were harsh Israeli
policies toward Palestinians
in the administered ter-
ritories.
Noting indications of grow-
ing Palestinian frustration,
the American envoy told a
Hebrew University audience
that the U.S. has made clear
that it remains deeply op-
posed to the use of deporta-
tion, to administrative deten-
tion and to the destruction or
sealing of homes, particularly
where that takes place with-
out due process, without the
provision of trial, without the
production of evidence.
Libyans Expelled
Canberra (JTA) — The
staff of the Libyan People's
Bureau in Canberra was
given ten days to leave Au-
stralia, the Zionist Federa-
tion of Australia reports. Au-
stralian Prime Minister Bob
Hawke, announcing the ex-
pulsion, said that the People's
Bureau was simply serving to
facilitate Libya's destabiliz-
ing activities in Australia
and the South Pacific region.

New York (JTA) — A total of
871 Jews left the Soviet Union
in May, it was announced by
the Soviet Jewry Research
Bureau of the National Con-
ference on Soviet Jewry (NCSJ).
This brings the 1987 total
through May 31 to 2,302, com-
pared to last year's figure of
914.
The Intergovernmental Com-
mittee for Migration in Geneva
said that 230 Soviet Jews went
to Israel in May. In April, 717
Jews left the Soviet Union, with
168 immigrating to Israel.
Israel has been the destination
of 587 Soviet Jews this year.
Commenting on the highest
yearly Soviet Jewish emigra-
tion figure since 1982, when
2,688 Jews left, NCSJ noted the
"slow but continuing upward
trend in Jewish• emigration in
the last several months?'
