There Will Be An Annual Meeting of the JEWISH VOCATIONAL SERVICE and COMMUNITY WORKSHOP for the purpose of electing officers Reclaim the Land! A Zionist Responsibility on June 10, 1987 from 4:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. at after so many years of vul- nerability, behave cynically." Indeed, Friedman says, "for some people, there is some- thing almost satisfying about catching the Jewish state be- having improperly. It is a bit like catching one's Sunday school teacher in an indiscre- tion. This may explain both the shock and relish with which many news organizations have reported Israel's role in ship- ping arms to Iran, a country suspected of being deeply in- volved in international ter- rorism." But this does not explain the intensity, if not actual venom, which marks so much of the coverage of Israel both here and abroad. Israel's most con- sistent and vigorous critics in the Western media are the lib- eral organs which once were the most outspoken supporters of the Zionist vision. In Brit- ain, Israel's most caustic critic currently is the Guardian, once the country's foremost advocate of a Jewish home- land. In this country, the far left exults in Israel's difficulties over its Iranian entanglement. One reason Friedman cites for the intensity of the spot- light on Israel is the Israel at- tempt to project itself on the world map, to assume the role of a major power. This, he says, has its root in insecurity "and, at times, in a bit of megalomania" and to Israel's self-perception as representa- tive of the Jews of the world which leads it to involvement in the affairs of nations with sizeable Jewish communities. But another factor is that the leaders of Israel in its early stages included men and women who had played a role in the countries of their origin, who had been active on the European scene before they made aliyah and whose out- look was basically cosmopoli- tan rather than narrowly nationalistic. Among members of Israel's first government were men who had served in European governments and parliaments. The world, quite properly, holds Israel, the people of the Book, to higher standards of moral conduct than it does Syria, as, indeed, do the Is- raelis themselves but, as Jean Amery noted bitterly, it de- mands too much. From a public opinion that "from the far left to the far right to peoples' self- determination" he insisted that the Jews have the right to expect "recognition of the fact that the much maligned Zionism is also a national lib- eration movement, that the Jews, too, the most martyred, most tragic people in the world, have a right to their national identity." They also have the right to be dealt with honestly and ob- jectively in the free world media. STANLEY B. LEVINE "SHOOTING PAINS," WHAT ARE THEY? If you're a victim of sciatica, you know what "shooting pains" are all about. The sometimes excruciating pain of sciatica frequently affects the hip, thighs, and back of the leg. The ankle and foot are sometimes af- fected, too. But that's not where the problem is. The sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body, extends from the lower spine to the back of the thigh and DR. STANLEY B. LEVINE knee. Then it divides. One nerve goes down the front of the lower leg, the other goes down the back of the leg. It's the inflammation of the sciatic nerve that causes the pain. This can be triggered by an irritated nerve root. What causes the irritation? The cause may be traced to a misalignment of the spinal column that's putting abnormal pressure On the roots of the sciatic nerves as they pass between the vertebrae. Through X-rays and other procedures, the doctor of chiropractic can locate misaligned vertebrae. Us- ing gentle adjustment, he can align it properly again to help eliminate the cause and the pain.
