Dr. Kremer Dies, Helped Deport Nazi Criminal New York —Dr. Charles Kremer, the Romanian-born dentist whose relentless pur- suit of accused war criminal Archbishop Valerian Trifa led to the cleric's deportation from the U.S., died May 26 at age 89. For nearly 40 years, Dr. Kremer implored government officials to deport the former fascist Iron Guard leader, late of Grass Lake, Mich., for crimes against the Jews dur- ing World War II. Dr. Kremer's efforts came to fruition in 1984 when Trifa left the U.S. for Portugal under a federal deportation order. Born in Braila, Romania, Dr. Kremer immigrated to the U.S. in 1919. He was graduated from dentistry school at the University of Pennsylvania in 1924 and was in practice for more than 53 years. He became famous in Romania for introducing penicillin there in 1947. Dr. Kremer, who lost many relatives in the Holocaust, devoted his life to bringing to justice Nazi war criminals who found refuge in the U.S. Maurice Klein Shared Family's Communal Role Maurice Klein had impres- sive roles of activism in this community with a family of prominence. His death on May 30 at age 89 recalls his family associations in many congregational and city movements. His father, Aaron Klein, was among the major leaders in Cong. Shaarey Zedek. He presided over the 90th an- niversary dinner of the synagogue in the Statler Hotel when Dr. Cyrus Adler, president at the time of the Jewish Theological Seminary, was guest speaker. Aaron Klein was closely associated with Rabbi A.M. Hershman in communal matters and his son, Maurice, shared the con- gregational roles with him. Maurice later shared family activism in Temple Beth El. His sister, Julia Klein, who died two years ago, was society editor of The Jewish News in the late 1940s. Mr. Klein was the co- founder of Klein Insurance Agency. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he founded his company 50 years ago. He retired 17 years ago. He was the past president of the Hebrew Free Loan Association, a life member of Franklin Hills Country Club, a life member of Cong. Sharey Zedek and Temple Beth El.
