NEWS USSR Chief Rabbi Says Restrictions Eased New York (JTA) — An un- precedented easing of restric- tions on Jewish religious and cultural life in the Soviet Union is well under way, the Soviet-appointed Chief Rabbi of Moscow, Adolph Shayevich, said last Sunday. He is the only Jew visiting the U.S. as part of a delegation of religious figures from the USSR, invited by the United Church of Christ. Shayevich, who spoke at a breakfast for Jewish leaders given by Rabbi Arthur Schneier, president of the Ap- peal of Conscience Founda- tion, said a new self- employment law will permit private teachers, including Hebrew teachers, to hold classes for groups of students, and to earn income. According to Shayevich, who is rabbi of Moscow's Chorale Synagogue, there was "warm response" in the In Loving Memory Of IRA J. SPOON Who passed away June 6, 1986. 'Another sign of 'glasnost,' " the new Soviet policy of open- ness, Shayevich said, were the repairs and restoration now being made to the mikveh (ritual bath) attached to the Marina Rose synagogue in Moscow. Another positive develop- ment, according to Shaye- vich, was the permission granted by Soviet authorities to permit the delivery of 5,000 copies of a Hebrew- Russian Pentateuch by the Appeal of Conscience Foun- dation in Moscow in time for Shavuot. Shayevich said the books were cleared through customs. USSR To Permit Rabbinical Training Spring Spring Glen, N.Y. (JTA) — Five leading American Or- thodox rabbis who just returned from the Soviet Union, reported here last week that the Soviet author- ities accepted their proposal to allow six young Russian Jews to study at rabbinical seminaries in the U.S. for the purpose of ordination. The announcement of the apparently unprecedented re- versal of Soviet policy was made to the Rabbinical Coun- cil of America's 51st annual convention held here by Rab- bi David Hollander, of the Hebrew Alliance of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, who headed the RCA delegation that visited the USSR. Hollander, an RCA past president, said the agreement was reached at a meeting in Moscow with Konstantin Kharchev, Chairman of the Council of Religious Affairs, which was attended by two representatives of the Foreign Ministry.
