THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
abbi Meir Kahane is
known for his knack
for getting into
trouble, whether it is with
Arabs, Jews, Soviet officials,
the State Department or
otherwise. Now it's the Kan-
sas police authorities who
have a bone to pick with the
controversial Knesset
member and founder of the
Jewish Defense League.
Last week, the police
department of Overland,
Kansas (pop. 79,084) issued a
warrant for the arrest of
Kahane after he failed to ap-
pear in court for a disorderly
conduct charge filed against
him last year. He could face
a maximum prison sentence
of six months if he returns to
Kansas.
Kahane, who recently
toured ten citiies in the
United States to raise money
for his ultra-right wing Kach
political party, was speaking
at a fundraiser in Overland on
November 18, 1986 when he
reportedly attacked a heck-
ling audience member named
Mousa Shukair, a Kansas Ci-
ty resident of Palestinian
Rabbi Meir Kahane
origin. Police were called in
and arrested Shukair and
another Palestinian, Rezek
Muslet, who was also in-
volved in the brawl. After be-
ing allowed to finish his
speech, Kahane was arrested
for disorderly conduct.
Charges against Shukair
and Muslet were dismissed
last week. Representatives of
Kahane said that the 55-year-
old rabbi was on a flight
enroute to Los Angeles on the
day he was required to appear
in court. Overland police said
although a misdemeanor
charge is still hanging over
Kahane, authorities will not
pursue him unless he returns
to Kansas.
