Prof. Harold Norris

The Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan will
celebrate the Michigan Ses-
quicentennial and the bicen-
tennial of the Constitution at
its annual luncheon on June
7 at noon in the main Jewish
Community Center.
Prof. Harold Norris will
speak on "A Bicentennial
Perspective: Why the Con-
stitution is so important to
us." Norris has been a profes-
sor of law for 26 years, teach-
ing Constitutional and crimi-
nal law at the Detroit College
of Law.
He was elected a delegate
to Michigan's Constitutional
convention in 1961. While
there Prof. Norris was author
of provisions in the Constitu-
tion prohibiting religious and
racial discrimination, creat-
ing freedom of expression,
expanding the right of peti-
tion, protecting the right of
appeal in criminal cases and
was co-author of the pro-
vision creating the Civil
Rights Commission.

Oakland County Circuit
Court Judge Alice L. Gilbert
and 46th District Court
Judges Susan M. Moiseev
and Bryan H. Levy will be
among the judges in the Na-
tional Bicentennial Writing
Contest in conjunction with
the 200th anniversary cele-
bration of the U.S. Constitu-
tion.
The competition is spon-
sored by the Commission on
the Bicentennial of the U.S.
Constitution, the American
Bar Association and USA
Today/Gannett Co. The essay
topic is "The Constitution:
How Does the Separation of
Powers Make It Work?"
