AT THE SYNAGOGUES

Temple Kol Ami Adds Social Hall,
Makes Capital Improvements

Temple Kol Ami in West
Bloomfield is undergoing major
changes that will allow the
facility to better serve its
membership.
The temple plans to make
capital improvements that in-
clude the addition of a -3,400-
square-foot multipurpose room.
The new room, adjacent to the
temple's sanctuary, will be used
as a social hall for receptions
and dinners and as an audito-
rium to expand the seating
capacity of the sanctuary.
As a social hall, the new room
will seat 250 people banquet-
style. When used in conjunction
with the 250-seat sanctuary, it
will provide auditorium-style
seating for an additional 400
members, making it possible
for the entire congregation to
sit together at the High Holy
Day services. Partitions will
allow the room to be divided so
that different functions can
take place at the same time.
The multipurpose room will be
available for rental to members
of the temple as well as to out-
side groups.
Changes at the temple began
after a 1979 study determined
that the congregation wanted
to improve the facility's
physical state. A fund-raising
drive at the time brought in
about $330,000, a large portion
of which has already been spent

on improvements that included
building and outfitting a
commercial-grade kitchen for
social functions and pouring
the footings for the new room.
The temple's capital fund
campaign is presently raising
$250,000 to finish the addition
and make other improvements
to the existing facility. Other
improvements include perma-
nent seating in the sanctuary,
upgrading current lavatories,
new carpeting and paint

throughout the present facility,
repair and expansion of the
parking lot, and a bridal chang-
ing room including a closet,
sink and vanity with mirror.
Groundbreaking for the
multipurpose room will take
place at 2 p.m. Sunday, preced-
ed by a family picnic at 12:15
p.m. Rabbi Norman T. Roman
said he hopes the room will be
useable in time for Rosh
Hashanah services in late-
September.
