James Lyons of the Ecumenical Institute for Jewish-Christian Studies. Haran is described by a Catholic leader as a "well- meaning" Catholic activist. Contacted by HMC officials Tuesday night, Haran insisted that he will fly to New York Saturday to pick up Shcharan- sky. Rabbi Rosenzveig called the Israeli Consulate in Chicago for verification, and was told Shcharansky rarely gives out his schedule in ad- vance. The Jewish News was unable to contact Shcharansky in Israel, or Haran in Detroit. "Right now, we have Gerald Haran saying that Shcharan- sky is coming," Rabbi Rosenz- veig said. "How reliable that is, your guess is as good as mine." But Rabbi Rosenzweig would be happy to introduce Shcharansky if he comes to Sunday's dedication, and Detroiters would be glad to welcome him. Chicken Squawk Continued from Page 5 Kosher Foods, which processes its chickens in Pennsylvania, "a cold-weather state" not con- ducive to the growth of salmonella bacteria, Cohen argued. Cohen's father, Allan, head of the Detroit Kosher Retail Meat Dealers Association, said that kosher chickens are fed wholegrains with no additives. The birds are cleaner, he argued, and when slaughtered the blood is drained and the in- testines removed before the birds are rinsed in cold (52-55 degree) water. Non-kosher chickens, he said, are immersed in boiling water with the blood and in- testines intact, causing the bacteria problem and a dif- ference in taste. Much of the squawking about tainted broilers could be eliminated if people at home will follow a few simple rules, said Sharon Sachs of the Food Safety and Inspection Service. Poultry should be cooked until it reaches a temperature of 185 degrees; cooked poultry should not be placed on the same plate as uncooked poultry; and hands and knives should be washed. "These are mundane things," Sachs admitted, "but people at home are the last line of defense against bacteria." Cabinet .Approves:. Peretz Appointment Jerusalem (JTA) — Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir won Cabinet approval last Sunday to appoint Shas Party leader Yitzhak Peretz a Minister Without Portfolio. Peretz resigned as Minister of Interior last year rather than comply with a Supreme Court order to register American immigrant Sho- shana Miller as Jewish. She was converted to Judaism by a Reform rabbi in the U.S. His return to the govern- ment is reportedly part of an agreement Shamir made to the ultra-Orthodox party to push a measure through the Knesset which would make Israel's Chief Rabbinate the sole arbiter of conversions perfomred overseas. Shamir set a 60-day dead- line for Knesset action, dur- ing which time Peretz agreed to serve without portfolio. If Shamir is successful, he will resume the office of Interior Minister. If he fails, Shas would not be obligated to support Likud's efforts to prevent the Labor Party from dissolving the Knesset and calling early elections. In another development, in New York, the leaders of 23 national Jewish organizations protested vigorously to Israel government leaders and key members of the Knesset against any political deal that would give the Orthodox Chief Rabbinate of Israel sole authority. A cabled message warning that such a move "imperils the unity of the Jewish peo- ple," was signed by the heads of 21 religious and secular organizations in the United States. The cabled message was sent to Shamir and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and to eight Labor and Likud leaders in the Knesset. It stated: "We are profoundly disturbed by new reports that a political deal is being made to give the Orthodox Rab- binate the power to decide the legitimacy of conversions made abroad. The result would be to deny any spiritual validity to those who identify with the Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist move- ments and thus to offend millions of Jews around the world."
