L

ea Behnkendorf finds
that by participating
in singles and
community activities and
traveling she is able to meet
new people.
An occupational analyst
for the Michigan Employ-
ment Security Commission,
the 30-ish Behnkendorf often
has to travel in her job. She
includes travel among her
leisure activities as well.
Last year, Behnkendorf
took a trip to the Orient with
the American Jewish Con-
gress and met two women
with whom she has become
friends. "It was an opportu-
nity to meet more people to
be part of my life."
In addition to traveling,
Behnkendorf is an art
aficionado, taking classes and
visiting museums and gal-
leries. A person who enjoys
the outdoors, she sails, likes
cross-country skiing, swim-
ming and camping. "I love
traveling," she remarks, "and
enjoy the beauty of nature."
She also plays racquetball
and does calinetics — small
movement exercise.
A Flint native, Behnken-

dorf earned a B.A. degree in
TV and radio at Michigan
State University. She has
since taken some graduate
classes in communications.
She is a member of the
Greater Detroit Section, Na-
tional Council of Jewish
Women; Women's American
ORT and is a facilitator for
the NCJW's SPACE service.
She also is a member of the
planning committee of the
Community Network for
Jewish Singles and chairman
of its Fit For Single Life
Symposium, scheduled for
June 13 and 14 at the main
Jewish Center.
Behnkendorf said that al-
though her needs as a single
are being met, there is still
room for improvement for the
larger singles community.
She said according to what
she has learned from other
singles, there is need for a
singles community calendar,
a 24-hour singles hotline,
more social activities for
single parents and their chil-
dren and more social activi-
ties for persons age 40-50.
The Southfielder said that
her involvement in Jewish
community activities is her
greatest contribution to the
community. She finds there is
a double benefit. "I think by
being involved with SPACE

and in the activities at the
Jewish Community Center,
I'm giving and receiving at
the same time. That's a
rather marvelous way for me
to be involved."
For example, she started
with SPACE, a service for
widowed, divorced and sepa-
rated persons, as a partici-
pant in a support group, since
she was getting a divorce at
the time. Following that ex-
perience, she trained to be a
facilitator, or group leader,
and now is actively involved
on that scale.

Something else she found
beneficial is group leadership
training classes at Oakland
University. "My life has been
enhanced by taking group
leadership training at Oak-
land University. It's one of
the exceptional things that I
did in terms of how helpful
it's been to me personally and
at work and (it) allowed me
to be more effective in the
different singles activities I
have participated in. I would
recommend that to anyone."

Most of all, she is proud of
her role as the chairman of
the forthcoming singles sym-
posium. "You develop sen-
sitivity to people by par-
ticipating in a project like
Symposium."
