Former Detroiters Mr. and
Mrs. Norman R. Atkins of Los

Angeles, Calif., announce the
engagement of their daughter,
Liza Beth Atkins, to Paul David
Wachter, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Claude Wachter of New York. A
May wedding is planned.
Ms. Atkins was graduated
with honors from the Universi-
ty of California at Berkeley and
received a J.D. degree from the
University of Southern Califor-
nia Law Center. She was, until
recently, an associate at the

New York law firm of Shear-
man and Sterling. She is the
granddaughter of Mrs. Betty
Lehrman of Southfield.

Mr. Wachter is an associate in
the corporate finance depart-
ment at Bear, Stearns and Co.,
Inc., in New York. He was
graduated from the Riverdale
Country School, the Wharton
School of the University of
Pennsylvania and the Colum-
bia School of Law, where he was
a Harlen Fiske Stone Scholar.

Sinai Hospital will kick off
summer with a combined fit-
ness event and health fair on
June 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
on the grounds of the hospi-
tal.
The Fitness and Health
Fair will include free counsel-
ing and health tests, includ-
ing the latest body fat
analysis test using a new
electrical impedence machine
with a personalized weight
loss program for each partici-
pant, hypertension screening,
cholesterol blood tests, skin-
fold measurements, cancer
risk profiles and glaucoma
tests.
There will be short work-
shops on pre- and post-natal
exercise, and massage and re-
laxation techniques. There
will also be a wheelchair
roundup for free cleaning and
maintenance of wheelchairs
and a wheelchair test track
to give able-bodied individu-
als an opportunity to see

what it takes to maneuver a
wheelchair. For the kids,
there will be a double Dutch
jumprope champs demonstra-
tion.
Free food and live jazz
music will add to the fes-
tivities.
The fitness fair is being
_held in conjunction with
"Start,to ,Fitness," a series of
events including: a 20-, 40-
and 60- kilometer bike ride, a
two-ten kilometer _fun run, a
two-ten kilometer walk and a
two-ten kilometer wheelchair
run. Novice athletes are in-
vited.
There is a registration fee.
Registration forms are avail-
able .at the Sinai Hospital in-
formation desks, the Conti-
nental Bike Shop in Hazel
Park, as well as many sport-
ing goods stores, running and
bike shops and health clubs.
Participants will receive a
"Start-to-Fitness" T-shirt,
patch and certificate.
