Former Cop
Gets Settlement
Chicago (JTA) — A former
Chicago policewoman received
a $140,000 settlement from the
city of Chicago in a religious ac-
commodation action, according
to the American Jewish Con-
gress which,-along with private
counsel, represented her.
Federal District Court Judge
William Hart ruled in favor of
Arlene Gold in settlement of
her lawsuit charging the
Chicago Police Department
with religious discrimination.
Gold became a practicing Or-
thodox Jew after ten years on
the force.
She contended that the
department violated her civil
and constitutional rights by
refusing to adjust her work
shift and instead requiring that
she use vacation days, sick days,
compensatory time and unpaid
leave in order to observe her
religious beliefs and practices.
