Maple . . . Dave didn't want the
kind where you ask for a cone
and get it slapped on by some
sourpussed gal . . . He wanted
a lot of variety, a lot of smiles
and a lot of scenery . . . plus
fresh, creamy, homemade ice
cream for cones, sundaes, splits,
shakes, etc.
Brian asked his former wood-
shop teacher at Berkley High to
build the store for him, but
Dave Alshbach said he didn't do
physical labor anymore .. .
However, what he does do is
make stained glass replicas
from pictures . . . Brian gave
him pictures of what they
wanted and Dave did the rest in
various framed stained glass
scenes like Cinderella and the
Seven Dwarfs, etc. . . . There's
also a graphic collage of comic
covers worth a mint.
Melanie is the name of their
7-year-old daughter . . . A son,
9-year-old Larry Yaffa, is "our
official taster" of the all-
homemade, on-premises ice
cream . . . He loves the West
Bloomfield Delight . . . or as
much of it as Larry can eat (no
worry, he gets plenty of help
finishing it off) . . . It's eight
scoops of ice .cream, four dif-
ferent toppings, four slices of
banana, cherries, whipped
cream and nuts.
There are 45 seats at
Melanie's . . . so clean with
black-and-white checkered tile
floor, large and airy . . . Grand
opening was last week . . . with
deli sandwiches of all kinds
also served, from corned beef,
etc. at red tables with red padd-
ed seat chairs.
A dream turned into a reality.
