Mickey Shapiro Cited
On Behalf of Bonds

Mickey Shapiro of West
Bloomfield, a second-
generation member of Cong.
B'nai David, will be honored
at the 1987 B'nai David
Dinner of Tribute on behalf
of State of Israel Bonds, it
was announced by congrega-
tion President Fred Ferber.
The event, scheduled for 6
p.m. June 9 at the
synagogue, will see Shapiro
presented with the State of
Israel's Gates of Jerusalem
Medal, "in recognition of his
service to his congregation,
the community and the
Jewish state."
This is the second Israel
Bond tribute awarded to the
Shapiro family; in 1983 his
father, Asa, was similarly
honored by B'nai David.
Mickey Shapiro is a finan-
cier with ownership positions
in numerous real estate, re-
tail and financial institutions
throughout the United
States. He also has a minor-
ity ownership position in the
Chicago White Sox baseball
team, "just for fun" he says.
A member of the Israel
Bonds Presidents Club, and a
leader in his synagogue,
Shapiro is also involved in a
number of philanthropic
organizations, with focus on
Jewish causes, principally the
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah and

the Holocaust Memorial Cen-
ter, of which he is a director.
Tribute Dinner chairman is
Shapiro's brother, Steven. A
tribute committee is in for-
mation.
A private reception honor-
ing Shapiro will be held in
advance of the dinner by
hosts Mr. and Mrs. Jerome
Soble.

Seniors See 'Drum Song'

Senior adults will see the
film, The Flower Drum Song,
at 2 p.m. Sunday in the as-
sembly hall of the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Branch of the
Jewish Community Center.
At 11 a.m. Tuesday,
Frances Weinberg will review
Immigrant's Daughter by
Howard Fast, in honor of Is-
rael's 39th anniversary. The
review will take place in
room 4 of the JPM.
At 1 p.m. Tuesday in the
JPM assembly hall, Rabbi
Elimelech Silberberg of Cong.
Bais Chabad of West Bloom-
field will discuss various as-
pects of Israel, followed by an
Israeli movie. The program
concludes the senior adult
department's month-long cel-
ebration of Israel Indepen-
dence Day.
A total of 35 senior adults
will join with Hillel Day
School's sixth graders in the
third annual inter-
generational concert entitled,

p.m. Wednesday at Adat
Shalom Synagogue. The con-
cert is a joint effort of the
Greater Detroit Section, Na-
tional Council of Jewish
Women; Hillel Day School
and the Senior Adult De-
partment of the Jewish Cen-
ter.

Sinai Hospital, in coopera-
tion with the senior adult de-
partment, will present a
hearing screening at 1 p.m.
Thursday in the JPM assem-
bly hall. The weekly health
screening will take place
from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in room
10 of the JPM.

The senior adult choir,
the direction of Vivian
Stollman, and accompanied
by Celia Dzodin, will present
its final concert of the year at
2 p.m. May 31 in Jaffe Hall
of the JPM. The Kazoo Band,
directed by Ms. Dzodin, also
will perform. David Klavons
is master of ceremonies.
