B'nai Israel of West Bloomfield, in conjunction with the Cantors Assembly of America, will present a can- torial concert at 7:30 p.m. June 17 at the synagogue. Appearing in the concert will be Cantor David Bagley of Cong. Beth Shalom, To- ronto; Cantor Louis Danto, of Beth Emeth-Bais Yehudah, Toronto; Cantor Louis Klein of Cong. B'nai Moshe; and Cantor Chaim Najman of Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Proceeds from the concert will go to the endowment fund of the Cantors Assembly — Cantors Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary. A native of Lithuania, Cantor Bagley attended yeshivot in Europe and Shanghai. The renowned con- cert artist came to the U.S. as a teenager and pursued a cantorial career. He was the cantor at the former Cong. Beth Aaron in Detroit, and served synagogues in Tel Aviv, South Africa and Montreal. Singing in what is termed a robust tenor, Cantor Bagley has performed and officiated before dignitaries in the U.S. and Israel. He has many al- bums to his credit. Cantor Danto, who is noted for his interpretation of classical art songs in the Jewish and secular reper- toires, was trained in the Ita- lian Bel Canto style. A native of Russia, Cantor Danto was at the Park Synagogue in Cleveland, Ohio, and served in Atlantic Beach, N.Y. as well. He's been at Beth Emeth-Bais Yehudah for the past 20 years. He has concertized exten- sively throughout the world and has recorded secular and liturgical music. Cantor Klein has served Cong. B'nai Moshe for nearly 30 years and has served as president of the Detroit Can- tors Council and has ap- peared in concert throughout Michigan and the Midwest. Cantor Najman has been the cantor of Cong. Shaarey Zedek since 1979 and has ap- peared in concert throughout the U.S. and has sung at major national Jewish organ- izations and commemora- tions. Couple Receives Service Award Judge Avern Cohn will pre- sent Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hyman with a community ser- vice award at the Yeshiva Gedolah of Greater Detroit's First Annual Dedication Ban- quet on Wednesday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Goodman. Hyman has been instrumen- tal in assisting the Yeshivah Gedolah with its ongoing legal problems with the City of Oak Park over improvements to the building.
