Academicians and literary
experts in the English-
speaking world centers are
vying for words properly to
evaluate the great achieve-
ments of Richard Ellmann
who died May 13 in Oxford,
England.
The acknowledged out-
standing authority on
William Butler Yeats and
James Joyce, with an ac-
cumulation now of recogni-
tion of his impending works
on Oscar Wilde, Prof.
Ellmann had a record of half
a century of literary creativ-
ity. He was 69.
He is survived by his wife,
Mary; son, Stephen Jonathan;
daughters, Maude Esther and
Lucy Elizabeth; two brothers,
Erwin and William of De-
troit; and two grandchildren.
Prof. Ellmann, who held
the prestigious Goldsmiths
Professor Emeritus position,
was born in Highland Park,
Mich. His father, James I.
Ellmann, was a municipal
judge and nationally promi-
nent as a legal arbitrator.
His mother, Jean Ellmann,
gained recognition as a poet
and illustrator of her poetic
works.
After serving in the OSS
army intelligence in World
War II, Ellmann did post-
graduate work at Trinity Col-
lege, Dublin. That's when his
lifelong devotion to the works
of Irish literary figures com-
menced.
In The Jewish News tribute
to him, announcing his com-
pletion of the biography of
Oscar Wilde, in Purely Com-
mentary, Jan. 30, mention is
made of another of Prof.
Ellmann's works dealing with
Irish authors. The article
stated:
"The Library of Congress
has just reissued a volume by
Prof. Ellmann, entitled Four
Dubliners. They include the
biographies under, these ti-
tles: Oscar Wilde at Oxford,
W.B. Yeats Second Puberty,
James Joyce In and Out of
Art and Samuel Beckett:
Layman of Noland.
Ellmann's biography of
Joyce won the National Book
Award and keeps being re-
ferred to as the authoritative
study of the man Ellmann
called "the first writer to
show us in English what
modern literature really is."
Prof. Ellmann's noteworthy
academic life included profes-
sorial positions at Harvard,
