Act II
Dinner for Two at
Machus Sly Fox
duction to the Passover Hag-
gadah moved us the most: "The
year we are here, next year
may we be in the Land of Is-
rael. This year we are slaves,
next year may we be free."
Here in the Diaspora we recite
it only twice a year — at each
Seder. In the cramped Lenin-
grad apartment this message
of hope hangs painfully day in
and day out.
In a nearby apartment some
70 children had gathered to-
gether for a Purim shpiel.
Adults have their Purim
shpiel, as well. The Purim
parody has become a major
event for the newly observant
Soviet Jews. The traditional
Purim narrative is interwoven
with the modern day predica-
ment of peril to their personal
lives as they seek permission to
emigrate from behind the Iron
Curtain.
As we entered the taxi, we
bid farewell to our final Purim
escort, Sender, a graduate stu-
dent in physics. He simply
smiled and said, "L'hitraot
B'karov - B'zman Acher,
B'makom Acher. L'hitraot
B'Yerushalayim". (See you
soon, but in another time and
place - see you in Jerusalem.)
Wiesel Chides
Indifference
Washington (JTA) —
Nobel Peace Prize Laureate
Elie Wiesel called upon uni-
versities to set a moral
example by making
humanities courses mandat-
ory in professional schools.
"The enemy is indifference.
Your own study is .a weapon
against indifference. The
university must become a
moral example," Wiesel told
a large student audience at
George Washington Univer-
sity (GWU).
Wiese l's remarks about
universities occurred during
an address in which he listed
the major elements of an
immoral society. He used
South Africa and the Soviet
Union as modern examples.

Hebrew U. Gets
Scholem Library
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
late scholar of mysticism,
Gershom Scholem, possessed
the world's largest and most
comprehensive library of
kabbalah and mysticism —
19,000 volumes — according
to the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem. Now the volumes
are part of the Gershom
Scholem Library at the uni-
versity.
The library was donated to
the university by Scholem,
the scholar of mysticism and
Hebrew University professor
who died five years ago.
